i have a 67 3/4 ton ford that i just bought for my first truck. i was screwing around with stuff and i wanted to look inside the manual steering gear box. i took off the 4 bolts where the steering shaft comes into the box and turned the shaft to see what would happen and the gears inside came halfway out and now i cant get them back in.. im tryin to get them back in but i dont know why they wont.. can anybody help me??
19shorty68...don't hijack the thread, if you want to talk about your truck start a new one.
floydfan94 - steering gear boxes are dangerous to mess around with if you don't have the proper training and tools, they need to be set up properly using inch-pound torque wrenches and proper specs. At this point you would be best off going to a junkyard and getting a new one. If you put it back together wrong it could lock up while you are driving (even if it works initially) causing you to get in an accident.
Hmm well your well on your way to learning how to tinker with stuff. Heck don't stop now. You just keep at it till you get it back on Right. How an the world are you going to lean any thing if you just roll your lip down kick some rocks and walk away form it..
Jack the front wheels off the ground a little center them going straight. Recenter the sector shaft over the steering shaft worm gear put in 2 bolts holding it cover closed. Now test by turning steering wheel lock to lock, Count the turns in each direction so you'll know when your back in the right tooth on the sector shaft (sector shaft hooks to lower pitman, that's the one that moves the all the steering linkage). Adjust sector shaft screw just enough to remove the end play. when wheels are straight .If to tight your steering wheel will not return to center after you have completed a rolling turn. If to loose you'll have a lot of back & forth play in the steering while driving Okay. So go fix it young man and become one of us shade tree mechanics just enough to keep your old classic running for yrs to come. Good luck!
Just do it! my 2cents
