OK, I just got the '67 to brake FINALLY after 2 quarts of brake fluid and bleeding till I bled my own blood.
Anyway, I was driving it up and down the driveway and turning etc, and all of a sudden the steering no longer works properly. It is a manual box and if I keep turning and turning it will catch a little bit enough to allow it to sorta turn if you work alot. There is no longer a stop, I can just spin and spin the wheel. Is there some sort of adjuster that may be loose like a worm gear or something. I dont know what the steering system consists of since I wasn't at that stage of the resto.
It's an all original truck so all the gear is stock. Anybody have any ideas? I'm just happy as hell that it didn't happen after I got the thing roadworthy and found this out at freeway speeds.
If I need a new box, what year broncos can I pirate one off from.
First i would check the bolt on the input shaft, of the steering box, and then the other end of the steering shaft. Both of these bolts need to be thight. If you lost one the shaft could slip on the splines and cause the situation you describe.
The slippage you described is exactly what is happening. I tightened the hell out of the bolt and it worked for about 100' and then started to slip again. Can you get the coupler that goes from the steering box input spline shaft to the steering column?
I think it is a one piece deal, the whole staft from the steering wheel down. Look into converting to power sreering using a 70's 2wd box from a full size truck.
Since it's all stock I would like to keep it that way w/o converting to power steering etc. It's just going to be a driver w/a little offroading here and there.
