ive heard the terrible head gasket storys and now i need to see what i should do for this problem......
last few mornings the truck has been giving me some smoke on start up but then goes away. today drove today and it started smoking on and off mostly white but didnt smell sweet like coolant.....but i went and got 3k pounds of gravel and it ended up over heating. i pulled over and shut it down before it went into the red. i then opend the degas bottle and seemed to steem for a long while. ended up putting roughly 2 gallons of coolant to fill it up. drove home with no smoking that i noticed......
where do i start to find out if its head gaskets, egr cooler or whatever else you guys might have seen.
Mine is doing pretty much the same thing. Coolant ends up low but no leaks. Runs fine until i put a load on it then it overheats. Mine ends up puking out the degas. Yours?

Do you have any gauges???
If you have Temp spikes that happen fast usually points to head gaskets
you need gauges to check your ECT vs EOT spread to rule out a plugged oil cooler
I'm going to try to find me a scan guage 2 tomorrow. I pulled the EGR valve today and it was pretty sooty but it wasn't wet. I cleaned it up real good but I have to go pick up new orings and gasket in the morning. When mine overheated, I pulled it over and turned the heater on and it went down almost immediately. I wish I had the guages so I could see for sure what those numbers are but I'll fix that tomorrow hopefully.
5. Road Test For Restricted Oil Cooler – Setup and Observations:
a. Install integrated diagnostic system (IDS) select engine coolant
temperature (ECT) and engine oil temperature (EOT) PID’s on IDS
Datalogger
b. Carefully drive the vehicle at wide open throttle (WOT) / high load to
achieve maximum boost.
NOTE
FOR ACCURATE TEST RESULTS, ECT TEMPERATURE MUST BE GREATER
THAN 190° F (88 °C) WHEN MEASURING THE ECT AND EOT MAXIMUM
TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL
NOTE
PERFORMING THIS TEST STEP OUT OF SEQUENCE CAN RESULT IN
INACCRUATE TEST RESULTS. THIS CAN BE CAUSED BY A LEAKING EGR
COOLER ALLOWING (HOT) COMBUSTION GASES TO ENTER THE ENGINE
COOLANT AND ARTIFICALLY RAISING THE ECT READINGS.
c. Observe ECT and EOT PID’s on IDS Datalogger. EOT maximum
temperature differential might occur at throttle tip-out.
(1) If EOT is within 15° F (8.4° C) degrees of the ect, go to Step 7.
(2) If EOT exceeds ECT by 15° F (8.4° C) or more at any time
during the test, go to Step 6
Step 6
is to replace the oil cooler
Step 7
is to test head gaskets.
Without any additional TSB’s specifically for clogging oil coolers, the above statement
has been adopted by the community as the benchmark to determine a clogged or clogging
oil cooler. For the lack of a more in depth test process we will assume that a delta of less
than 15° Fahrenheit your oil cooler is operating within specifications. If it is above 15°
Fahrenheit oil cooler maintenance is required, which may include replacement of the oil
Thats good stuff. I'll get some guages tomorrow and report back iwth some numbers as soon as I can. Maybe that'll tell the story. I can't thank you enough for the help!
I just checked this post this morning, I will park on a hill and take off egr valve, I take it I need a new gasket/o ring? I have no gauges where do you guys get ur scan gauges at? And yes it seemed to be fine then temp shot up. I pulled over and shut it down like 30 seconds after pulling over. I just got a little freaked out its never done it before. Anyway I will pull it off after work I just wanted to make sure ill have all the parts to put it back together. THANkS for the start points guys you guys always lead me in the right direction
ok so i got the time to get the egr valve off, and it was very wet inside the intake so i figure i need to get a egr delete kit or egr and oil cooler. any idea on what route to go, or what brand/company to go with?
