went to Cruzin the Coast this past weekend and saw a couple of nice 53s... both had what appeared to be a factory made trailer hitch hidden under the bed. One exited thru the bumper and the other thru the roll pan...
wondering if any of you have a factory made hitch... what brand. model and what it fit originally ??? need to think about this before we get the bed/roll pan all fabbed up and forget it... it's also got to fit in there with the mustang tank.. gonna get a little crowded...
John, I found this one advertised. It looks like it mounts further in on the frame, and then an extension is installed when you are going to use it. Jag Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitches for your Truck or SUV

John... you are da man !!! that's exactly what I was looking for... gonna call tomorrow and verify a few measurements... I have the Mustang tank out back and have to make sure I can squeeze it all in...
thanks man... and thanks to all with suggestions and ideas... THAT'S why I love this place !
I used a dodge hitch on my 54 F250 and it was the right width. I bought it about 10 years ago when "Orschlens" was having a close out. I measured the width and it bolted in to the bolt holes for the rear bumper bracket and only had to drill two more holes. The receiver is about flush with the back of the bed.
I have more length with the long bed, so that might not be an option for a short bed.
some of the older gm cars had flip down license plates, 69-70 clevelles, gto, the mechanism is easy to remove as its bolted to the bumper
My mom's 69 Impala had the flip down license plate. I used to think that was a bad place for a gas filler (what with a rearender), but it had a massive chrome bumper that was made out of the same metal they make skillets out of.
