OK I just recently picked up a 1965 F250 V8 352 FE.
It has been running fine, this morning we took it to my sons soccer game and then stopped by the house before getting some lunch. When I came back out and started truck it started out kinda rough. I hit the and it was jerky. so I stopped let it idle a min and started to go again, push the gas in slowly and the engine dies. I give it a lot of gas and it runs rough and backfires, gassy smell in the air. Now it won't even hold idle, just dies. It seems like the carb might not be getting enough fuel. What do you think, old fuel filter? clogged jet? I have the next week off, am I going to be spending it rebuilding a carb?
Weclome aboard; sounds like some garbage either broke loose in the carb. does it have a inline fuel filter or one that screws into the carb? Or it could be a timing thing.
I even had a bad alternator onces on a 66 F100 300cid; that cause the same symptoms.

I just went through the same exact thing on my 1965 with 390 V8.
For me it was the carb. I took it apart and did a rebuild. Ill let you know this though, it took 4 cans of carb cleaner to clear out all the plugged holes,jets, etc.
Truck had no fuel filter to speak of. (not sure what carb you have, but when you rebuild check, there are some carbs with internal fuel filters). So I added one before the fuel pump.
Truck runs like a beast now.
Usually when a car acts like that its fuel or electrical. That was the case with my car. Timing was off and needed a new coil and distributor. Got that running good and then the carb finally got too backed up.

fuel filter is off the pump. I am going to in tall an inline filter when I rebuild the carb.
I have never actually rebuilt a carburetor, any advice?
352 CID (5.8 L) FE V8. This is the engine that came in this truck.

You have a 352 Cubic Inch Displacement not liter.
Sounds like clogged fuel lines that can be a multitude of things. Pull the coil wire, and the fuel line near the carb, poke it in a water bottle and have someone turn the ign switch over to start, while you watch the amount of fuel being pumped.
Could be: fuel filter, pump, line clogged at tank, or gummed up carb.
Unscrew the cannister below the pump...typically the forgotten filter...Ive seen then so loaded up with everything including parts of the kitchen sink...change filter and viola...Another possibility is if the fuel line from the main fuel line to fuel pump is old and cracked...like most rubber is, the hose will fail from the INSIDE out...thus plugging filter, etc.
If you wanna put an inline filter in, get some lengths from a local part store unless the original metal line is already screwed up...beware also as the fuel line inlet port on the carb may be weak too...they are just potmetal afterall...
The fuel filter can those screws on lefty loosy as viewed under the can looking upward at bottom of the can...and they can be tight as the rubber O ring(which comes w/new filter) is probably sealed tighten then heck.

As Don says, as original...the cartridge fuel filter fits inside a metal cannister that threads onto the pump.
Most peeps are unaware, so it rarely gets changed and because they are unaware, they install an inline fuel filter.
This filter was used from 1963 thru 1972 on I-6 & V8 Passenger Cars, Trucks, Econolines and 1966/72 Bronco's.

1980 was the first year that Ford used liter designations for I-6 & V8 engines...4 years after the last FE engine was installed in an F100/350.
5.8L was Ford's liter designation for the 1980/82 351M, 1980/96 351W / 351C's were never so called, as the last year it was installed (Passenger Cars only) was in 1974.
Welcome to FTE. I read the responses above and thought I would elaborate on the 5.8 vs 352 thing. In a technical sense a 352 is the same displacement as a 5.8, but Ford didn't call any of their engines by the liter designation until the early 80's. NumberDummy listed the exact year recently but I can't remember what year it was. So while technically you are right, and a 352 is a 5.8 guys here won't call them that because of the year of these trucks. Some would assume that your truck had an engine swap out of a newer truck because you call it a 5.8. You will see the same kind of comments if someone says they put a stepside or fleetside bed on their truck. Stepsides and fleetsides are Chevy's, and if they used a Ford bed it would be a flairside or a styleside.
you said you had a ''Gas'' smell in the air? that would suggest a ''Flooding'' issue!
too much gas? could be the choke is stuck closed or needle and seat stuck open and
filling the floatbowl up and over flowing into the engine wet fowling the sparkplugs!
pull one of the plugs and see if thier wet?..a rebuild may be in order?
I agree. Pull the carb apart to check for sediment in the float bowls or check the fuel filter. I have had that happen on various trucks over the years.

The carb on your truck is very simple to rebuild! just buy a kit and follow the instructions
Soak the carb in ''Carb cleaner'' after it's apart, if you have access to a air compressure
Blow out all holes in the carb body before installing the new kit!...good luck!
Well I never got to the carb, turns out it was a faulty coil.
Thank you everyone for the input. With all the trouble shooting I was able to upgrade some things and clean up the engine a bit.
