water in dpfe sensor

I just replaced my dpfe and there was a small amount of hot water in it. I'm asuming that's not good right. I was getting P0401

Some of the original design DPFE's were known to die from water damage getting into the circuitry. I believe Ford changed the design to make this less likely to happen. You didn't say where the water was - DPFE's have two nozzles connected to the exhaust system, so some condensation of water vapor is inevitable, just as water dripping from the exhaust pipe happens now & then.. Getting water into the circuity is not inevitable, though.

When I removed it, I shook it and water came out of both holes. It was a Aftermarket plastic one. I replaced it with new motorcraft

Exclamation

I wouldn't make too much of the water then. I read somewhere that the circuitry controlling the DPFE adapts to below freezing temps when ice might form inside the device until the motor warms it up, so apparently water has been accounted for in the design & function of the DPFE.
