Charging system seems to be out of whack. Just bought this van .Couple days drivin to work and back dead battery. Replaced with new couple days dead. Hooked up charger which also has alt check shows between 11.8 and 12 output .Replaced Alt still showing same output .Wiring and bat post look good .Am stumped .Any ideas on what else might be causing this .Oh yea had old alt checked and its good . Lost Its a 92 with 4.9, 130 amp alt
You've got a major problem somewhere. I would check Alternator output with a different meter first and see if it's the same as with your battery charger/alt output meter. Fords usually charge pretty high, around 14 volts. If you're only charging at 12, something's off. But it may be something else too, as a new battery wouldn't go dead in 2 days without a major drain on it. Does your starter turn over normally?
does your truck have a gage or idiot light for the charging system? if a gage, i'm assuming a negative reading while running? if an idiot light, either it'll be on or you have a wiring issue. i had a volvo awhile back that had alternator issues but wouldn't turn on the idiot light, it was a wiring problem that wasn't carrying a signal up to the light. i ended up replacing the wires all the way back, as they were in bad shape (like half the wires on the car)...
first things first, does your alt have the internal or external voltage regulator? if external, it should be replaced with the alt. if internal, don't worry about it, its part of the replacement.
if nothing shows up, start checking wires with an ohm-meter to find the issue, as sometimes wires look good but are corroded or broken inside
