My first ford pickup
The diesels are great engines, though you will have to get used to them a little bit since they drive differently. When empty, they seem like they have no get up and go. Put a load of firewood on the back, and it acts the same as it did with no load. That's the nature of a diesel engine.
This truck is old enough, where it may need some maintenance on the engine, if it hasn't been done already. The pre-powerstroke forum on this board is a place you need to visit. Keywords for you search about are
air intrusion
return line kit
air water separator
o-rings
beru glowplugs
glowplug wiring harness
Air intrusion is what happens when the o-rings get old and let the fuel drain back to the fuel tank. The truck will start, then stop, and then you have to crank and crank to get it going. The return kit is a simple fix for this.
Beru glowplugs are the only ones to buy. Other cheap ones that are easily available at the local store burn out, and can get stuck and break off down in the engine.
You have a older style truck, and may have the old water separator on the firewall. It should be bypassed if you still have it, since it can also let air into the system.
There is a main plug over near the pass side inner fender that feeds the engine wiring. In this plug, two of the wires are large and feed the glowplugs. They tend to melt, so this needs to be checked, and the two large wires can be cut out and separated from the plug.
