new ford owner

Greetings to everyone, I'm from the UK,
My name is Richard and I have just purchased a 1972 F250 Ranger, it's in an amazing condition for it's age and only needs some cosmetic touch up of surface rust in a few areas and only 3 bits of non structural welding, the 390 has been removed because of an engine fire but has been replaced with a 2.5L diesel engine from a 2000 ford transit with 5 spd manual box, this returns a nice 40Mpg, 30mpg towing a loaded car trailer :-) the engine & box are the only non standard parts.

I understand that it was originally red/cream camper but has been sprayed satin black and no longer has the camper part.

I look forward to many years with this truck using it as much as possible and doing a rolling restoration, until I can respray it and re upholster.

I look forward to getting to know many of you & thank you in advance for any help & advice I receive.

Richard

Welcome to the forum. Are you from Britain, or still reside there? Also, your info on your truck's engine and tranny is interesting...did you do the engine/tranny swap? Any pictures you could share? One more question, then I'll quit...is your mpg estimates based on the Imperial gallon or US gallon? I've got a 69 F250 camper special and have been toying with the idea of replacing the mill with a diesel...how does your truck drive on the road?

diesel swap

Hi guys, I'm British through & through, I fell in love with American cars when I worked in the Caribbean in '89/'90.

I didn't do the swap, the guy I bought it off did, it drives fantastically, the gearing is a little tall so acceleration is not neck breaking but top end is great, Neil did admit he'd had 110mph out of it mpg is imperial gallon, am collecting the truck next Wednesday when the cheque clears and will take a load of pictures then. what I do know is, the radiator has been moved back so that the hoses are standard transit, from gearbox to middle bearing the prop shaft is transit, bearing to axle is original, it's the 2.5L Di engine with the t75 gearbox, Neil did a great job ensuring that all parts are off the shelf, all suspension steering & brakes are original parts, the only things I need to do is calibrate the speedometer and remove the helper springs on the rear.

Wow, that's about 32 mpg in US gallons. Very respectable. I'd love to see some pix of under the hood...engine and transmission to driveshaft. I'm guessing "transit" is a service/delivery vehicle of some sort...would love to know what brand and a see a pix of it. We don't have much access to diesel technology from across the oceans here in America, but that is starting to change a little bit. Most diesel conversions here are US diesels...which are great engines, but I'd love to see how a 2.5L diesel fits in our trucks.

Hi CJ, it's made by Ford, don't know what the availability is outside Europe, your local ford dealer maybe able to get you 1 but would be expensive brand new, could always look at Ebay UK and see how much it would be to ship to USA.

I'm really curious about the engine/tranny swap done to your truck. Did some online research and found a Transit forum on one of the Ford sites...might be this one, I forget. Anyway, rumor on that forum is that Ford is going to release the Transit in the USA starting next year, for the delivery/service market. Now I need to find more info on that 2.5L diesel engine and tranny. Would live to find a website with some info on both...if anyone knows of such.

Very interesting conversion, and sounds like it was well planned and very functional. Congrats on a great truck!
