Is the EBPV exhaust brake worth it?

Or should I just gut n plug my pedastal? I ask because I have the tranny out for a new clutch and a good friends' dually to drive until I get my truck fixed so I finally have the down time to fix my turbo oil leak. Not much money though since I need new brakes too but I'm tired of the oil in my valley and on the tranny. Is the homeade jake brake worth doing or should I save the $100 for the rebuild kit and gut it? I don't pull heavy loads much anymore but almost always have a 3-4000lb trailer behind me.

I use mine as an exhaust brake with my DP Tuner. I would spend the $100 and get it working right. Just my take on it though.

My turbo pedestal started leaking around 200k so I went wtih a non-EBPV pedestal and outlet and I'm happier not having it on there. With light loads like that and a 6-speed you may be better off without the future liability of a leak point, but I imagine it would be nice to have for a brake on heavy loads. My max towing weight is under 10k and I also have a manual, so I didn't really feel the need for it, and I didn't want to do that job again when it decided to leak. With that said, I've seen some threads floting around here regarding oil starvation at the turbo when plugging an EBPV pedestal and not going with a blank pedestal, so that would sway me toward rebuild, even though a blank is about the same price at Riffraff.

The brake works pretty well! Especially with a manual trans I'd set it up with out hesitation, I've done them on all my 7.3's I took it off this one only because I don't tow or haul any thing but kids and dogs! But I still find myself reaching for the switch all the time it really works!

I really like mine, but I tow in the mountains a lot. If you're on flat ground it might not be such a big deal.

I use the decel tune (ebpv brake) on my DP tuner all the time, empty or loaded. I live in the mountains and tow a horse trailer or 21' boat often and it allows me to come off hills without touching the brake pedal where normally I would have to ride it most of the way without the decel. Even empty it's very noticeable and usable in many situations. Now if I could figure out a way to have it turn off when I touch the throttle...

That's one of my all time favorite "mods". I use it even unloaded up in the Sierras all the time.

Thanks a lot guys! I'll be rebuilding my ebpv and saving for a DP tuner if I can stop replacing the clutch every 18 months

Could you just wire a switch on dash from ebpv then go down to a door pin type of cut out switch set up on the throttle pedal arm to have it activate when switch is on and when youre off throttle?
