Part of the problem has been solved, When I opened the distributor cap, it was clean inside. However, I bumped the Hot wire running to the ignition coil and the wire fell off. Looks to be the original wire and ignition coil. I attached the wire back and the truck ran a lot better, but still very low on power during acceleration and it can barely climb a small hill at 40 MPH. Now on level ground it will very very slowly get up to 70 MPH, and run smooth.
So I think I'm going to focus on the ignition system rather than the carb. New ignition coil, plug wires, and the pertronix solid state ignition, should be an easy install and low price.
I went back and read through the previous posts. I didnt see where anyone mentioned the fuelpump. That might be an area you want to take a look. I have had a few go bad on the FEs. When they are getting weak under load such as climbing a hill or power run up will hesitate buck and backfire. On level ground they will seem to run ok. Dont know that thats your problem but I would look at that as a possible problem.

That's a good point. At the age of most of the items under the hood, there could be several problems. I also like to be thrifty but it seems that going thru things as you can afford them is better than waiting untill you have troubles. Once you get the engine running well, you might want to turn your focus to the brakes if you haven't already been there.
I think you are on the correct path to taking care of the problem. The only other parts I may replace at the same time are the distributor cap and ignition rotor as they are wear items in the ignition system also. As a reminder, don't forget to rest the ignition timing after the electronic ignition is put in. One degree of dwell effects the timing two degrees so depending on what the dwell was when the timing was set last, the timing may be off quite a bit. Good luck on your project. Hope this helps.
For a 1966 F100 with a 6 cyl, the pertronix website says I need Ignitor 1266 or a Ignitor 1261, depending on whether I have a Holley or Motorcraft distributor.
Is there a way to determine which distributor I have? Mine looks old and there are no labels one it.
I believe they may be talking about a holley or motorcraft ''Carburator''? go back and
re'read? it may be as spell check prob, on their website? but I could be wrong?

Ummm, yeah, huck, you are wrong . It is distributor type.
I am not sure how to identify which it is, maybe someone else?
I don't know how to ID the dist or what to look for. It may come down to removing it to look for markings but I would call Pertronix first and ask them what to look for. It may mount in a different way that would make it easy to ID in the truck.
Thanks for clearing that up ''Old Harley''! I was not sure? learn something new every day
But never heard of a factory ford Holley Distributor? so I assumed they were talking about the Carb?

Heck, huck, me neither . I just went to the Pertronix website and they make a distinction (different Ignitor part numbers) between Holley and Motorcraft distributor type for a 6 cyl. Ford truck. BTW, there is a footnote regarding that ID but I couldn't find the picture they were referencing. It says it has to do with the shaft.
Thanks for all the help. The culprit was the vacuum advance on the distributor. Once I fixed that, the truck ran perfectly!! I will install the Pertronix ignitor when it arrives next week.
I'm glad I went through this process. I learned a lot about my truck and changed a lot of things that probably needed to be replaced.
Glad you found the trouble. It can be frustating to learn that way but very worth while. It no doubt runs a little better with a new ignition at any rate!
jstevens2,
Glad you have it under ''Control'' at least we all learned a lot from your prob! well, I learned a thing or two!, anyway, when you get the ''Pertronix'' it will make your truck
run so much more smooth, you'll think you have a ''new motor''...
PS, I would think that if you saw a word on the dizzy' that started with ''M'' that should
mean ''MotorCraft''?....Good luck and Let us know how it all works out!
Old Harley''
Yea, I haven't ever had a 6 banger in my life! not that I don't like them, just never did see a Holley Dizzy on a V8?... my first car was a 63 ford fairlane, second, a 64/1/2 mustang, 3rd, 67 Mustang Fastback, and on and on, but no 6's...but I do own 2 ''Harley's
