hello everyone i am new to this site. but i thought it would be usefull to me for getting info on my truck. I am 18 years old and dont know too much about the truck i just got. it is a 79 ford F350 custom. it has a 390 big block in it. it is in rough shape but i got it for free and i am planning to drive it soon. any info on it would be appreciated. thanks
Dustin
Only two things that stand out to me. One is that if you have four wheel drive you probably have a dana 60 front axle which is quite desirable. Second is that if the engine is indeed a 390 then it is not original, it has been swapped in at some other date.
Yeah, I'm 19 years old and I bought a 79 F350 Custom too. Mine was a surplus fire department rescue rig. Mine has a 460 ci and a C6 automatic tranny. I bought that truck for $2400. Came with an 18,000lb Ramsey winch, foot wide front bumper, extra cable, custom utility box, Class V tow package, dual batteries, used to have a generator mounted in it. It's awesome. I like to see people's reaction to my red and white monster (I have full size big rig mirrors on it - its intimidating and I can give anyone a run for their money).
Runs pretty good, but I'm still working on it. You said that your truck had a 390? Not likely. If its the original engine, its probably the 400. I have heard the 400's had problems with them, but personally I have never fun one. I only run the 460, so I'm pretty much addicted to it (I have 1 too many wreckless driving tickets).
I hope you have a lot of fun with that 1-ton. Although I should add that they have a stiff suspension, so get a good cupholder.
You can read more under F350 "Problem Child" in this forum.
I know of a local '78 F350 with a 390 FE in it. It's a retired U-Haul truck, the present owner got it right from U-Haul. The FEs were used longer in the heavier trucks.
Does the intake extend under the valve cover, so the valve cover bolts partly on the head and partly on the intake? That would be a FE.
