Water Pump replacement

I will be replacing the water pump in my 92 F250 4x4 tomorrow and was wondering what I was getting myself into. It appears that I will need to remove the alternator bracket, fan and belt. My question is have any of you done this on a 460? Are there any suprises I need to watch out for? I've replaced water pumps before just not on this truck. Thanks....

Make sure you remove the backing plate off your old water pump and transfer it to the new/rebuilt pump. New/rebuilt pumps don't usually come with this plate. It may require you to buy a second water pump gasket.

Water Pump replacement

Nothing special about replacing the pump....
The only thing I ran into was the shaft on my replacement pump was very slightly larger in OD than the original... and that meant that the clutch for the fan would not fit over the shaft. I polished the shaft with 400 grit paper until it fit.

It might be a good idea to replace the front main seal, timing chain and sprockets while your in there. Parts are cheap and you've got the timing chest all but open anyway.

If you do replace the chain and sprockets... put in the set for an early 460. this will give you 4 degrees advance on the cam which will provide a small boost in performance.

good luck

Rob.

Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate the info. I don't think I'll have time to replace the timing chain and gears. I'll probably regret it later. Thanks again.

Doesn't the front seal have to be installed in the timing cover with a special tool or hydraulic press?
My rules of thumb when changing a water pump:
1) Clean the inside of the timing cover well and check for cracks around the water ports, as well as regular gasket surface cleaning
2) Coat both sides of both gaskets with sealer (I use the aircraft gasket adhesive and have never gone back)
3) I always paint new engine parts like this Ford blue, not just because it looks good, but the pump will rust in about a week, if left untreated (parts like brake master cylinder get a clear coat of enamel)
4) I always replace the bolts with brand new ones, even if I have to use washers because I can find the shouldered bolts. (learned this after snapping one off as I tightened the last bolt to torque!)

That's about it... But it's just one man's opinion!

pretty straight forward, just remember to put everything back where you got-em and your fine. Many of the bolts are different lengths, so mark-em.
