Filling DEF???

I have had a message for less than half full DEF (back in my information tab in the menu) for quite some time, at least 2 weeks. I finally got around to making a round at the stores getting my oil, filter, and DEF. I went out to the truck and filled the DEF tank and it apparently over flowed. I had DEF all over the ground under the fill port.

Last time I filled it the truck took the whole 2.5 gal jug with no issues. This time it gurgled with about 1/8 left in the jug and then after that it started flowing again and went all over the ground.

Was the gurgling the thing saying "I'm full"?

Although, with the message saying less than half full for a while now I would have expected it to take all of that 2.5 gallons and more - a full tank is 5 gallons.

Air pocket while filling is common. you can probably go out and put some more in it now. it is almost 5.5 gln tank.

Yep same sort of thing here last weekend. It was the first time that I have filled it with a non-Motorcraft jug and I won't do that again! I had 280 miles to empty so I figured there couldn't be more than a quart left in the tank. Using Valvoline DEF, on the second 2.5 gal jug with no more than a quart left it burped and spilled all over the truck. The truck needed a bath anyway so I cleaned everything up real good.

From now on for the second jug I will always transfer it to the empty Motorcraft jug that I saved. I like how their spout seals to the filler neck and makes it virtually spill proof.

Same experience in the past, once.
I'm less aggressive now and fill only when I can hear the liquid pouring into the tank.
What I should do is follow 720Deere's idea and buy a jug of the motorcraft DEF so I have that jug for the BlueDEF.

I'm new here, but been browsing a bit for info. Just bought my first diesel 10 days ago. I got a 2011 F250 Lariat 4x4 6.7L with 755miles now. Was wondering what kind of aftermarket DEF u guys were running and how expensive it was. My dealer told me he had the Motorcraft brand for $22 a gal. Dont know what kind to go with, but sounds like the Motorcraft container is a must.
BTW helluva site guys, look forward to being a part of it!

Blu-Def from Walmart........$11.34 for a 2.5 gal jug. It comes with a filler tube and I had no problems with it overflowing. Message center said I had 780 miles left but it took both 2.5 gal jugs.

When my message center first says it's under 1/2, I can not get 2.5 gallons in unless I drive for a few more hundred miles.

I use BlueDEF.
It has the API logo and reports it meets the ISO-22241-1 standard.
This URL is the data sheet.
http://www.bluedef.com/PDF/BlueDEF_Data_Sheet.pdf

From the Ford Diesel Engine manual:

Use only DEF certified by the
American Petroleum Institute (API)
such as Motorcraft, DEF or
equivalent meeting Ford
specification WSS-M99C130-A
and/or ISO 22241. Look for API
certification trademark shown here.
Repairs resulting from the use of
non-certified DEF products may not be covered by your vehicle’s
warranty.

Most Pep Boys, Autozone, Napa and Advanced Auto stock certified DEF products these days. You are usually looking at between $12 and $15 for a 2.5 gallon jug. Once again though, I highly recommend the Motorcraft jug for ease of filling without a spill!

The 1 gallon Motorcraft jug cost me $12 (CAD)... I got it just to have the fill spout with the nifty built in air tube (just like those anti-spill fuel containers). Next time I'll go for the Air1 stuff or something which is only $7 for a 1 gallon jug and $20 for a 2.5 gallon jug.

The parts department told me they have a shelf life and not to keep too much stock. I know enough to keep it from freezing but I didn't see a best before date.

The funny thing is the Valvoline jug says to "store between 30*F and 80*F". I laughed pretty hard at that one and thought to myself I need to remember to only drive my truck for 2 months in the Spring and 2 months in the Fall!

I stopped using Fords DEF (costs way too much!) when BlueDef became available at the local O'Reily's (former Kragens) stores at just under $12 for the 2.5 gal jug.

I have several Motorcraft spouts with the air tube and use them on the BlueDEF jugs which eliminates the spills. Lots of stores carrying DEF now and at pumps at truck stops.

So that's why the whole DEF system is heated, I guess. So you'd think that if the DEF can't work because it's frozen it will just run with higher emissions, but I bet the truck is programmed to consider it a mission critical component and shut everything down as if it's going to go into meltdown otherwise.

I've had new jugs of -30°C windshield washer fluid freeze before, so I will keep the DEF inside with the batteries.
