I have a 1994 Ford F700 Bucket Truck with the 5.9 Cummins. If I drive it at lest once a week it does fine and does not die. But If i don't use it for a 2 or 3 weeks, when I start it (starts great) it will run for about 8 to 10 minutes and dies. It will start back up but is hard to start with throttle to the floor. Some times it will stay running after that or you have to do that 2 or 3 times, then usually after that it will continue to run. Any advice or help would be appreciated.
It sounds to me like it is getting air in the fuel system when it sits. If it has a large screw-on fuel filter remove the filter and see if it is full of fuel before you start it the next time it has sat for a couple of weeks.
You are either getting air in or not enough fuel to the injection pump.
You have the screw on filter and then a screen in a cup next to that and i think there is a screen in the tank,....although I'm not 100% sure about the screen in the tank.
Run till it quits and then remove the screw on filter. If it is COMPLTY full of fuel you most like have enough fuel. No matter what I'd stick a new on on it anyway.
I had an air compressor that would only run if it was put in the shop at nights. Found out the fuel tank had a crack around the fill cap. Im in washington state so its usually wet. Whenever the rain would fall the fuel tank would fill with water. The engine would start and run for a couple minutes then die once the water got into the system.
Probably air though.. Get your vacuum gauge and start checking the suction side of the fuel system.
