About two weeks ago, my 07 Escape began taking several seconds for the engine to start. It turns over immediately when key is turned but does not fire until after several seconds. Runs great once it starts. Once it is warmed up, it restarts easier but still not immediately like it would a few weeks ago. Checked air filter and it looks ok. Any help would be appreciated.
Go back to basics. Fire, air, fuel. Does the ignition system need some maintenance? Does the air filter? Does the fuel pump work properly? If it runs smooth with proper power after it is started, then it seems the initial conditions for starting are not there for a few seconds. I would suspect that the fuel pressure is dropping in the system after shutdown, leaving the injectors a little starved when you first go to start the engine.
Try cycling the key from off to on to off a half dozen times before you try to start the engine. That may run the pump at each cycle to refill the fuel rail.

Thanks for the info. Tried the switch on and off several times and it did not work. Then changed fuel filter and at first did not seem to make a difference but now is starting as designed. Not sure why the delay of a few days in getting back to design, but seems to be ok for now. Thanks for you all's input!

I agree with Tom, it sounds like it was fuel pressure issue. A clogged fuel filter could definitely cause issue you describe (usually no one ever changes them ). Glad you got it corrected!
