Y in the World!!

There's always been lots of talk about the crappy ypipe on the Superduty's but until you see it and hold it... you don't realize how small the restrictions are..1 1/2" if not less.

Getting ready for another RV event so snapped some pics of stock pipe 00-04 model SD that ford used on 5.4L and 6.8L engines. And once you hold the stock ypipe in your hand and look through it , you think to yourself like What??

Pics of the After market one SPD ypipe.

Installed pics here

Wow!!!

I have an 03 with the stock exhaust and I actually like the sound of if. Would installing the Y-pipe make it louder?

Does the Y pipe change affect CA smog check? Would you be more likely to fail a test?

Using Bernoulli's laws, that small run of restriction does almost nothing to peak flow, except accelerate the exhaust pulses into the larger pipe.

However, I can personally say, getting rid of them DID help low-end throttle response. A lot.

It did nothing (noticable) to high-end power.

Would love to see dyno runs of before and after

I usually see 10hp 10 tq to wheel with a ypipe old and new style.

Its just hard to picture ... 415 ci 10 cly engine pumping air through just a 1 1/2" dia hole.

Well, it's really only 3.4L trying to push through that one hole

Try this - put a hole in a piece of sheet metal, the size of the inner diameter of a straw. Blow through it.

Then, blow through the straw. Much harder to blow through the straw than a hole the same size.

Not sticking up for Ford in any way, but I understand why they did it.

Since I have a 2000 and my y pipe is not as restrictive is there any performance advantage to changing it out to this one?

Are these Y pipes CARB approved or compliant? I'm interested in this, but don't want any surprises when it's time for a smog check here in CA.

As I understand it, these COULD technically be illegal in CA.
In the next breath, I will say I have NEVER heard of anyone getting called on them, and many of us run them. Whether that is because they've never been noticed, or just a case of inspectors noticing and not caring, I don't know.

CARB has basically said that "anything" that "could" affect emissions must be tested, proved, and certifed (aka paid for!) not to effect emissions.
Any changes to an exhaust system "could" effect emissions. So an inspector with a grudge, a boat payment, or just an unthinking bureaucrat could raise a flag. But most have enough knowledge and experience to know a change like this wouldn't affect emissions to any noticeable degree and will ignore it. Kinda like aftermarket mufflers.

If I ever did get called on it, I would just install a CARB approved header system.

In my experience you get flutter unless you install some sort of headers to get rid of the stock manifolds. The poorly designed stock manifolds are the reason Ford even needed to come up with the later necked down y-pipe. At least thats the conclusion I came up with after fooling with a couple V10 trucks.

As I understand it, these COULD technically be illegal in CA.
Just tell us what IS legal in CA. The list will be shorter that way.
