I have 99' (feb) f250 SD 4WD with 135,000 miles. I've had a slight vibration that seemed to get a little worse over the last 6 months. Had the tires re-balanced and it seemed to help. Now when I hit 55 mph and above I get the vibration. Took into the local stealer, I mean dealer, and they said the drive shaft is bent and want $750+ to replace it!!
Not sure how it could of bent. I use the truck to pull my 5th wheel otherwise it's a weekend driver.
My question is, should I just get one from a Junk Yard, Or order one from somewhere else?
Any other possiblities of the vibration? could a balancing weight rusted off and I just need it re-balanced?
Tips, pointers, suggestions would be appreciated!!
I would get the second opinion or at least check it yourself. Bend drive-shaft would heave some visible damage on it, or carpenters level edge or other straight piece of metal can confirm the shaft damage.
If you have a local driveline shop I would pull it out and take it there. I just had a truck driveline completely rebuilt, everything new except tube, took 1.5 hrs to get it back. It was from a truck so much bigger and more expensive, $1125, but all is good. The only way it would get bent, IMHO, is if it got hit or someone did a bad u-joint install like hitting tube or using press.
