As I was watching my fuel gauge in my 84 f250 steadily fall towards E it made me wonder what kind of fuel economy you other guys with 460s or the other large engines are getting. Just a rough guestimate but I'm getting around 8-10 mpg with a trailer and 8-10 without a trailer. Also does anyone have any hints, tips, or ideas that you've tired on your truck to get better gas milage? Look forward to what y'all have to say
Your mileage sounds pretty normal. Getting the same mileage with or without a load indicates you probably have low speed gearing(probably 4.10's?).
Make sure your tires are pumped up as high as you dare and can stand the rough ride(don't go over the sidewall cold psi rating). Slow down a little bit, and that's about all you can do with a 460.
'86 F-250 Supercab 400 HP/550 ft/lbs 460 with 750 double pumper, ZF5, NP208. Dana 60 swap up front, 3.55:1 gears. 4" lift on 35"x12.5". With two full tanks the truck weighs in about 6000 lbs 12.5 MPG at 70 MPH Towing about 5500-6000 lbs 10.8 MPG at 65-70 MPH, or approx 6 GPH. In 5th I'm turning about 1900-2000 RPM at 70 MPH.
In a stock height truck with a build more focused on MPG than mine I would expect mid teens unloaded wouldn't be difficult. When the truck was stock everything with 351w/C6 it would get 16-17 MPG at 65-70.
I've got the 4 speed Borg in my truck but when I get on the highway I try to keep it around 60 I forgot to mention 99% of my driving is stop light to stop light
