While im in here....

2006 F250 PSD Lariat 78Kmi

Hey guys just got a new alternator from DCPower and ordered blue spring from Tousley and I plan on removing quite a bit to make access easy.

Obviously im going to check my belt but what can be replaced or serviced while fan&shroud are out, coolant hose off, intake pipe etc. I was looking for procedures in Tech Folder for these two items but didnt manage to find it. (still new here) Serched some threads and found what I think can direct me to figuring the rest out.

Im mostly worried about my glow plug system and injectors because I get a hint of white smoke now on a cold start, but also have a horrible alternator and batteries are trashed because of alternator. They were new May of this year and I really hope their still good. So when I get those things done I was thinking of testing everything to make sure im tip-top.

Somewhere on the threads I read about a Deltran Batt Tender and was wondering if this is something I should check out if my batteries need a good charge as I dont own a battery charger.

Thanks guys,

Jeff

Replace the belt and check your idler and tensioner bearings while you're there.

Unless you really want to, you really don't need to remove much to change the alternator and install the blue spring.

Belts and tensioners don't seem to fail nearly as frequently as they do on 7.3L and 6.4L engines.

And no, you do not need to remove the fan, shroud or even the belt to swap out an alternator on these engines.

I replaced my belt at 67k when I first rebuilt my truck. Now at 103k, I'm replacing the belt and all the idler/tensioner bearings while I'm in there doing engine work. Some of the bearings are starting to feel a little rough, but would probably go another 50k.

Well maybe, you should check the FICM due to the bad batteries/alter....they have been known the cause problems with the FICM when they fail/go bad

check the ficm and if you do pull fan might as well check the water pump or replace it. not a bad idea just to do. or atleast check the front cover for cavitation and then just get a gasket

I wouldn't get too deep, you'll just increase the cost and time. Water pump will probably go 200k anyway.

The Deltran is nice, but if you don't have a good battery charger I would get that instead. The newer smart chargers are not that expensive ($50 to $60) and you would probably get a lot more use out of it. Do a search on the web for "smart chargers"...Schumacher SSC-1500A is the one I got at WalMart about 3 years ago and it has been good...I have used it on the ATV's, motorcycles, tractor, cars, and I throw it on my truck about once a week and do a slow overnight charge...it has even recovered sufated batteries that were left discharged for a long time. There are others out there too...just do a search. Good luck.

Be careful of the electric fan clutch wiring harness when you get the shroud back in. make sure it is clear of the fan!

Im in Fremont...up by Toledo. Where you at?

Well, now I dont know what the fudge. I read to remove it all now you tell me not too, come on guys hahahaha. Ill figure it out.

Now how do i check my tensioner and idler pulleys and where is a diagram of that? (the tech folder right?)<or no?

Is everyone using the gatorback belt on these hogs or a Motorcraft?

And again many of you mentioned the FICM testing and I agreed, is this something that fails and is able to be fixed easily. I guess my questions is can i resoder the connections and ill be golden? How much do they run?

How do i check my alternator and load test my batteries. I check batteries while running engine yesterday and they were at 12.2. Thats weak right? Really weak.

Thanks,

Jeff

I've used the Motorcraft belt and haven't ever had an issue with it. I think most use the Motorcraft since it seems to last well. To check the bearings, when the belt is off, spin and wiggle them to check for smoothness and any slop.
