I have a 2001 7.3 in my Ex. I live in WI and travel north alot for snowmobiling. I have been noticing alot of the diesel guys are switching to Amzoil additive..summer and winter formula..from Power Service?? They are happier with it..milage..higher cetane level. Anyone else have any experience with Amzoil??? Thanks guys..
I run Amsoil fluids in my crankcase, tranny, and rear differential in HERS (below). I believe synthetics are better than standard dino oil / fluids for longevity and performance. In HIS, I run Amsoil in the rear differential, Schaeffer's in the tranny (Brian from BTS wants his tranny using Schaeffer's, so I say "Yes, Sir!!!"), and Shell Rotella T (regular dino oil) in the crankcase.
When it comes to oil in the crankcase, while I believe synthetics are better...I think filtration is much more important than whether you're using dinosaur oil or bar stock synthetic. Frankly, I believe Amsoil to be far overpriced, even though I still use it in that one truck religiously. Get a good bypass filtration system on your truck, and if you also want to use synthetic later, that's great. It's looking more and more likely I am going to switch to Rotella Synthetic in the crankcases of both trucks in the near future, after 9 years of Amsoil.
If you are talking about the Amsoil fuel additive...it is "OK," but the OptiLube products have tested MUCH higher, and for a lot less per tank. I used the Amsoil diesel additive for about 8 tank fulls, and felt like I wasted my money. I'm sure it was better than not using it, but B20 biodiesel would have been far superior.

If you are into the snowmobiling thing, it is going to be cold. Might be nice to come back to the truck after a freezing ride and have it start easier. I would use 5W40 Shell Rotella which is diesel rated and flows better. When I am in a risky situation weather wise, I dump some anti-gel before and let it work thru the system and be happy when it starts up nicely.
Other than that, I haven't personally seen any of the snake oils give anything more than a lightening of the wallet. Used to drive a diesel car 200 miles a day and none of them made much of a difference when cruising at 80 and have a little city driving.
