......interesting little fact here i talked to an engine builder that has been building motors for 50 yrs he says the 351W is just as good of motor as the 350 chevy just not near as many ppl like to build it up cost and what not
just to build on what you were saying. . .the 351 is in many ways better than the SBC. . .the 351 has greater stroke potential as its a larger platform (bigger, more robust block). . .but it costs way more to mess with vs a SBC. there are more aspects of the 351 that could be considered "better", but theyre apples to apples (like distributor bein up front for easy adjustments). theres nothin like a big cube small block, and the 351 has been the cream of the crop until the LS1 came along. LSX>SBF>SBC>modular.
i always digress, i second the notion "300 or 351". the 302 makes me angry when i drive it on the street. lookin at its "cute" crank and block make me shake my head at ford for putting it into a 3/4 ton truck.
351 is one of the best engines that ford has ever had, my second choice for a truck engine is the 300. I have had 9 different ford trucks to draw this opinion from with every engine available from 80-95 with the exception of a carbed 302 which i think would be a big disappointment. 302's are car engines...
Blacklab1; Thats what 18mpg in US gallons? Thats pretty dang good for that truck. I once got 21 in my 96' version of what you have, but that was with a very strong tailwind and over 220 miles without stopping (freak perfect scenario, never have come close to that again). I average 17mpg highway at around 60-65mph.
i completely agree 92f2urd i ve tried telling many chevys guys this and of course they wont hear a word of it
this is because blind brand loyalty is about as stupid as the general population, who dont know enough to make any kind of fact-based recognition of the advantages of each brand. they know "im a chevy guy" or "im a ford guy", that way they dont have to think about it any further. i sometimes like to set a group straight (especially if ive had a few beers) by rollin up and spittin some tech that they apparently know nothin about. each brand has their advantages, and if you want the best of the best you have to recognize these advantages and build accordingly.
one big thing i forgot to add about the 351 vs a SBC - 1/2" head bolts from the factory!.

i read it, thats what i was commenting on. i was just makin the point that its true of every "group", not just the chevy guys. i hate to say it, but ford prob has the most blind loyalty of any stamp.

I do acknowledge that there's better setups out there than what Ford puts out...But I like my Ford's, simply because thats what I'm more comfortable with....
