I just bought an 86 F-150 with a 1975 302 V-8 in it. The people before me put EFI on it (must have converted it over). Anyways, When i start it in the morning, it starts up after about 2 cranks, but later on in the day after its ran awhile and i shut it off and go inside, I come back out and it takes it like 5 or 6 cranks to start the engine. I have done a complete tune up on it ( Plugs, Wires, Cap, rotor, filters) and it still hasnt solved the problem. I have even bought a new battery which helped it a little bit but not much. Could it be the EGR valve? Also, when i take off it hesitates at the beggining but then runs fine. Please reply so I can get this problem fixed thanks
Have you pulled the codes? You probably should pull them so you can narrow down your search for the problem. And you won't be throwing $ at something thwt isn't broke.
Thanks. I haven't yet done the code thing because I'm not for sure what the codes are or even how to get them. As I come to think about it, I may have the ignition timing set wrong. When i changed the cap I may have not put the right wires back on right. This has happened to me before so I may have did it again. It now stutters alot when i let off the gas on low speeds and then try to accelerate again. I was told that it may be a gas problem also. Not gettting enough gas flow. But if that was it then it would stutter all of the time i would think or it would be hard cranking all of the time. If that was the case, could it possibly be the EGR valve not functioning properly all of the time? I dont know if you could please tell me a little bit about the codes i would greatly appreciate it. thanks
The egr valve could cause stalling and a rough idle. Usually not hard starting. But the codes will tell you if you have an egr problem since it's monitored by the computer.
You could have a fuel problem. Does it blow black smoke out when it finally starts? You could have a leaky injector. This will do two things. It will flood the motor, and also drain the pressure out of the fuel system, so the fuel pump has to prime it again after you shut down the motor. You have some other possibilities too. A fuel pressure test guage would be the giveaway to a fuel problem.
