Just bought a 99 EB Expy, 5.4 L running P265/70R17's just like the door sticker says I should. Speedo says 65 when I time actual at 60. I see a lot of posts about reading slower than actual (and had a dumb ole jeep do the same thing years back) but not reading higher. I've read posts on speedo, truspeed and OBD II. My dealer won't touch it unless it's over 10% out. Short of installing a Truspeed, any ideas? Thanks.
Seeing as how there is a certain margin for error when you time it, what I do is go find one of those "your speed is X" electronic billboards that the police leave on the side of the highway (it reads your speed as you approach and displays it on this big digital display so you slow down when you see how fast you're going) and use that to check your speed. Fortunately, here in Annapolis, there is a permanent one on this one road, so at any point in time I could go check my speedo.
You could call your state police barracks and ask them if and where they plan on positioning the billboard thing. I don't see why they wouldn't tell you, 'cause it's not a speed trap or anything.
Thanks XXL.
I've done that also, that's why I went to the timing for a comparison.
I used 12 mile markers and averaged the 12 times between each. It worked out extremely close to the X sign.
I'll let you know. Seems the dealership doesn't want to touch it.
Based on reading other posts on the board, I thought there would be a simple adjustment the dealer could do......We'll see...
I also have (3 days ago) just bought my 98 EB Expy, 5.4L running P265/70R17's Coopers and I'm having the same problem as you are. I've check a CHP speed board, GPS and the wife in our other vehicle and all the readings show it reading 5 mph faster then what we are actually doing.
What did you do to fix this? Was it easy? Or did you have to send it in to get it fixed?
Dealership said it was close enough and wouldn't touch it.
Right now I'm living with it, but it sounds like a Superchips microtuner has the capability to make the computer adjustment to solve it. The big problem there is the $311 cost. I also believe one of the suspension companies has a module that adapts to adjust speedo but it costs about $160.
No change yet, but I'm leaning towards the microtuner, because it would allow me to have several functions for the $311.

99 Expy Speedo Problem
How about this: Go to a different dealer! Tell them it's 6-7 mph wrong at 60 MPH. That's over 10%. Sometimes you just gotta' do what you gotta' do. It's despicable that they won't correct it when it's 5 MPH wrong at 60, so if you must' tell the next guy that it's 6-7, then just do it!
Unless I am wrong, if the speedo is off, then so is the odometer. 5 MPH at 60 is 8.333% -- that's 8.333% more miles you're putting on your truck, 8.333% less value to your truck when you sell it, 8.333% less warrantee, etc. You are being cheated -- 10% might be that dealer's "rule," but it's not a universal Ford situation. Your dealership service guy is a jerk. If you really want to stick it to him, call Ford's customer relations number and give them some heat, using the arguments above. If you want to just get it done and move on, follow my first suggestion of 6-7 MPH @ 60 and going somewhere else.
SOunds to me like you might want to pay a visit to Flat Rate Tech and ask this question in the Ford Forum. This site is hosted by a slew of Master Certified Ford auto mechanics/technicians and the knowledge base is hard to beat!
