Hello im new to this site and dont actually own an excursion yet, but i am deadset on buying one shortly and wont be stopped. anyways im going for a 2005 6.0L and i want to throw a moderate lift in it. i love the look of these vehicles with bigger tires rims and a decent lift that doesnt overdo its stance. i am looking for about 4-8 inch lift approximately and i am wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on reputable brands different styles and price estimates.
I havent decided if i should go for an air system because i will go offroading and dont want to pop a bag but i do like the adjustability. i want something that will provide a stronger suspension, not cause poor handling or feel, and be reliable.
also if some of you who have had a lift put in could i please see the pictures and how much of a lift so i can get a more accurate idea of how much i want for the stance i like.
thank you for your help and if i made a mistake or posted in a wrong location please tell me. Have a great day!
I really like the combo we are running. Most of it is listed in the signature. It ended up being a 6" lift on 35/12.50-18's. Did a V/mod B code spring change (lots of info on this - change to F250/F350 springs), ICON 4.5" spring shackles, 6" block in the rear, OUO traction bar, custom valved bilsteins, and many other lift parts. ICON makes real high quality kits in both all spring versions or shackle and block kits. I wanted to stick with the V/mod B springs as I tow heavy. The ride is great both loaded and unloaded. Here is a pitcture.
well thank you some of those lifts look amazing! i agree an 8 inch is pretty tall i like the stance with a 4-6 inch lift it makes the whole vehicle look much more natural at that height. Do you have any idea how reliable air bags are in an adjustable lift kit? i think it would be awesome to have a little bit of control over the height so i can change from 4 to 6 inches or something like that. wouldnt it also give a much smoother ride? so rough estimates i dont need accuracy about how much would a lift of 4-6 inches cost me and what are the options i have? i want it to be a suspension lift and still give decent handling and control if possible as well as upgrading the suspension and making it a bit stronger. is that unreasonable to ask from a lift?
I am saving up to get one of these monster suvs and i cant wait

wow i love how that looks it has a great stance to it its not too tall and the tire size goes well! does the lift you have there come as a full kit or was it pieced together? when it comes to suspension i have lots to learn and i dont want to really risk throwing parts together i would rather something that comes together in a kit and has all i need to complete the job (preferably myself) that picture makes me jealous!
what exactly do you mean when you speak of v mods b codes and all that other stuff?
The stock Excursion springs are to weak on a stock 6.0l Ex allowing only about 1" of wheel travel before the bump stops are hit. Many people change the springs to the same springs that a 99-04 F250/F350 run. These springs give about 1.5" of lift over the stock Excursion spring. On the back B code spring it is modified by mixing parts of the Ex spring with the B code - hence Modified B code spring (smallest two leafs from the Ex pack and the spacers from the Ex pack are put into the B code spring). Then 4.5" of lift can be had by spring hangers. I had Cary Towery at CTPerformance help put together a custom package of parts to acheive the lift. He also custom valves the Bilstein shocks for a great ride. It is not cheap but leaves you with a great handling, great riding vehicle still ready to tow 10000lbs. This package from ICON is very close to what I used '00 - '05 Ford Excursion 4.5" Hanger System - ICON Vehicle Dynamics adjustable pan rod bar 39290 - '00 - '04 Ford Super Duty Adjustable Pan Rod Bar - ICON Vehicle Dynamics

When I ordered from CaryT (as I just posted above), it came as a complete kit other than the V and B code springs which can be bought from Ford new or found used. I found used ones with relatively low miles. He also offers phone support 7 days a week.

my dads good friend (gm mechanic) he is a very good mechanic but is trying to persuade me away from the excursion saying the suspension is weak which is part of the reason i want to install a lift. i do go offroading and i dont want to be hitting the bump stops all the time but dont want to sacrifice ride quality and this sounds like a great setup. so correct me if im wrong but if i use a lift kit like your first link and before i throw the lift in i modify my leaf springs in the rear with some leafs from the superduty i will get approximately 6 inches and a stronger suspension along? how about suspension travel and articulation offroad?

Yes - that is correct. I now have 5.5" before hitting the front bump stops and 4.5" before hitting the rear bump stops. I went this route to keep it as strong as possible for towing. You may get better offroad performance from a all spring lift. The Ex is big and heavy and I do not imagine it will every be a great off-road machine. I do not do any serious off-roading so I am not sure if you would say good or bad on the articulation. I went out to the shop and jacked it up to see how far I could raise a axle but the jack would not go high enough. I had the right rear tire 14" off the ground and the left was still on the ground when the jack maxed out. I had the right rear 12" off the ground and the left was still on the ground - appeared it would go quite a bit further before it would start to lift the other side but again the jack maxed out.

wow thats pretty awesome! ya i dont want to do any serious offroading because if nearly 10,000 pounds of steel gets stuck there isnt much short of a semi that has the power to pull me out so i will be cautious but i do enjoy hitting some mud puddles and minor offroading. so with that kit, the steering geometry arm, some new shocks for the front end along with the modified rear springs i will have all i need?
is this something that should be performed by a shop because of the need for specialty tools or is this something that is fairly easily achieved by myself? i am very mechanically inclined and just getting into the heavy duty mechanic industry so i will have some access to tools and equipment but not a hoist.
thank you for the advice! your lift you have along with the tires suits the vehicle perfectly i wouldnt go any bigger of a lift
