It makes it alot easier to get to the back end.
I just like the seats better than the bench. The reason I didnt buy an X "new" was just because of the difficulty getting into the rear seats. I bought 3 expo's since. Now the Kids are gone and just me and the wife and a big *** trailer.
I have never had a bench so I don't know how hard it is to get into the back, but I was somewhat surprised at the difficult of egress even with the captains chairs. I'm also disappointed that the chairs don't slide at all. I usually only use the first 2 rows of seating, and as such, I really wish the seats had some sort of sliding mechanism so that I could slide them further back to make it easier to get into the 2nd row. With the captains chairs, you can walk between the chairs to get to the third row once you get into the second row... so my thinking was that if you have to flip the seats forward to get into the back anyway, might as well have the extra seat.
What I did was when I replaced my carpet, I kept the "40" section out. My older 2 who can buckle themselves sit on the 3rd row and my lil one is behind me. Since I did it while doing the carpet, I didnt even cut the holes. Looks oem to me.
