Looking to order a 2012 F150 and was wondering the axle of choice? There is the 3.31 non limited slip, 3.55 limited and the off road package which includes a 3.73 rear locking axle. In the King Ranch you can't get skid plates without the off road package which comes with the 3.73. Any recommendations?
Ralph, we would be glad to help you on here but you must give us a lot more info than you have provided so far. Trim level of truck, regular, super, or crew cab. is it flat where you live, engine choice, type of driving to be done, towing how much weight and how often, hauling how much weight and how often, are you planning on adding larger tires, and anything else that you can think of that will help us to help you?
My truck has the offroad package, and I love playing in the mud so the 3.73s, ELD, skid plates and bigger tires are perfect for me. When I'm on the highway though I wish I could have 3.15 gears!
I get 23 MPG cruising along at 60 MPH. Thats phenomenal for such a big truck. When I bump it up to 70-75 (normal speed for the flow of traffic on the highway here) I drop down to 18-19.
If you can give up the mileage get the 3.73s with the ELD. If you want to maximize mileage go with something lower.

What size wheels do you want? The reason I ask is that when I drove the 4 speed automatics the 20's with 3:55's the acceleration was terrible, you needed the 3:73's. Even though the new transmission is a 6 speed I can't imagine the 20's with tall gears being anything different. I'm sure that the 3:55's will be much better with the 6 speed transmission.
