The practice of having gauges "dumbed down" has been around for quite some time. I don't know of any new vehicles that have actual temp of pressure gauges, they are all calibrated to stay nearly still through a wide range of inputs, and only change when things are really hot or really cold...
Manufactures did this to avoid claims from people saying that their truck runs hotter when towing the same trailer as their neighbor's identical truck....
I had that same quesion last year when I put the Temp gauge in my truck and finally found the answer at http://performanceunlimited.com/library.html Technical Question chart, it says that synthetic oil is good to 250deg. , but not for a long time. Mine has been there and takes it's lick'n and keeps on tik'n. I just recently put on a higher volume, aluminun trans pan, I hope it lowers the temp on them bigger mountains. And my temp gauge mounts into the external filter just as the line goes into the radiator for cooling then it goes thru the external factory trans cooler.
I installed a trans temp gauge on my 2002 screw with tow package. I tow a 7500lb boat/trailer (total combined weight). I noticed this last week that my trans temp stays around 160-180 when moving at constant speed. I was pretty happy to see that.
Now here comes my question.....
There was a situation that we encountered involved 88 deg outside temp, AC on high, stop and go, construction and an accident. I noticed my temp moving up to 210 on occasion during the stop and go. Should this concern me?? I thought 210 was still on the "ok" side. I certainly would not want a long drive at a consistant rate at that temp but during this type of situation I thought it would be fine. Please advise.... I appreciate the advice.
David, Go to Click here: Performance Unlimited Automotive Center - Hartford, Wisconsin - USA Technical Library, this will tell you alot about trans temp
Mercon 5 is good for more heat! I 've had mine to 230deg a few times.
Thanks for the link. That chart really makes me feel better. My only question now is... Since my temp sensor is in the exit line about 20" from my trans pan I wonder what the temp drop is at that location. Im sure it is hotter in the pan by a few degrees. I will plan to change the fluid every 20k just to be safe.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how often to change my transfer case and axle fluids. I tow 7500lbs. about 2000 total miles a year. Is following the standard maintenance schedule good enough?
Dave, I just lately put a larger fin-Aluminum trans. pan on in hope to drop temp. a little more, it was a pain, but hope it was worth it, it has a drain plug on it, to change ATF once a year, if I feel needed.
I had to cut a quarter inch off the back of pan to get it up past the crossmember and use smaller drive to get the allen bolts(supplied with pan) in place.
to think I put gauge in to give me more to worry about!
My gross load is about 12,800# and that's a killer on the mountains in Wym.&Utah in my 7700series 150
Somebody on the 1st page mentioned a plug in the drivers side of the trans. I looked and could not find it, any help on this one would really be appreciated. 2nd Jim, which tranny pan did you select? and did you go with the extra capacity pan? Thanks guys.
So.Dually,
I not sure where that plug is, cause I used the Perma-Cool external filter, gauge and sending unit kit, it was most complete and gave me an extra qt.
Then I changed the pan, I put on a PML pan http://www.yourcovers.com/ it gave me another 3qts. and a bit lower temps, can't tell you how much yet , I only got stuck once in traffic on our local border bridge going up it, but then it was only 70deg. out.
The plug is on the drivers side about the middle of trans. It's very easy to get to. I think it's refered to a 'Test Port' by Ford. Chek out Stan's Web site under the Gauge install, he show's the tranny location on the last page. WWW.eurekaboy.com/f250.htm
He's done many mods, with great detail.
