computer reset

I own an 89 150 xlt 5.8 and have been having problems with idle. I took advice of many and reset the computer by disconnecting the neg. terminal for 15 minutes with headlight switch on. After reconnecting and running about 100 miles it seemed to idle a little better, but then it started acting wierd. It will rev up high on cold start for a couple of seconds and then come back to about 1000rpm till warm, then it idles about 600 but has bad stumbling on take off and will sometimes quit. After warm when I slow down from traffic speed to idle it will idle at 300-400 and then surge to 700 , very erratic. Did resetting the computer cause this and will it improve with more time and driving. Any help would be appreciated.

Is your check engine light on? Have you run the self tests to get any possible codes? Sounds like maybe a throttle position sensor or idle air control vale problem. If you have a Haynes or Chiltons manual it will explain how to test out these components, and also how to run the self tests. Hope this helps.
