Post 5-speed Trouble

i got a 1995 f150; up and over on the miles. It has the 300 inline 6, all and all a good engine. My problem with the truck is the tranny.
I am a GM Master Tech. and know alot about GM vehicles BUT know little about FORDs. Here is where my problem arises about 3000 miless ago, 3 and 4 went out, i was able to diag it as a shift fork problem, looking at the fork its self i noticed the fork was acually machined out!! so i installed a new fork....now 3000 later it happens again, no 3 and 4, found shift fork machined out replaced, also noted 1 and 2 was going also replaced that.
What could be the cause of this problem? has anyone else herd of a problem like this, i relly feel that my next step is to replace the rods that the froks ride on...what do you all think
Please e-mail me back with any info
THANKS
JAY

5-speed Trouble

Jay, this may not be a lot of help, but I know people have recommended to not leave your / rest your hand on the stick when not shifting. Apparently it isn't like the one trannies that one could drive around with while leaving it in a gear and holding on to the stick.

Still, 3000 miles is really not that many miles - so it shouldn't be your style.

Best,

i have heard that line before...i do not ride with my hand on the stick. But thakns for the reply. Also please note that the 3000 miles is only the amount of miles that i put on it after it went the first time. I have about 130k on the truck, way up and over
THANKS

5-speed Trouble

When my tranny forks did the same thing I determined the root cause to be a tranny fluid leak. The little rubber plugs in the shifter assembly go bad and cause this. But you'll never see it cause it only throws fluid out with tranny in use. It's hard to see a puddle forming at 60 mph. My tranny had welch plugs installed by local tranny guy, problem solved permanently. If not that you may want to just replace the plugs, heck you may have done so already. There's a story in the tech articles on doing it.

I've heard, but cannot confirm, that ford has actually started reccommending 30w motor oil instead of ATF. Apparently because the shifter forks wear too easily in these trans. Hopefully someone else can tell you who, what, where, when, and why on the motor oil. I just don't have the facts on it.

I have an 88 with the 5 speed mazda design and i rebuilt the tranny at 230,000 (thats when i bought it) because the input and cluster shafts were totally stripped. I now have put ten thousand miles on it with no probs...i put metal expansion plugs in the shift rod holes because mine was missing them and then where those black plugs were i just coated the old ones with RTV ssilicone...i have a small drip which i beleive is coming from the gasket where the shifter goes in the tranny...i run Quaker State Synthetic 4x4 - off road ATF with no probs in mine...
