building my 460

hi im building a 84 460 to put in my 78 f-150. the truck originally had a 351m auto and i know all the conversion stuff. But my question is could i get away with using early heads such as the c9ve or d0ve and a eldelbrock performer plus cam kit and still run on pump gas (low enough compression) and not have any valve clearance issues because of the cam?

Thanks in advance!

you would be better off with the D-2,or 3, 4. to keep compression down for pump gas.... your compression will be to high ( 11:0 to 11:5.) with C-e or dove castings. you wont have any problem with valve clearance as long as you go with performer plus kit. the rpm kit would a little too much for stock to mild motor.

The early heads will raise the compression and when used with stock or stock replacement pistions it probably will have a detonation problem if the block isn't decked to get the pistons up in their holes.
Anytime a bigger cam is put in a 429-460, push rod length and valve retainer to valve guide clearance needs to be checked amoung all other valve train related parts. If a valve is going to hit it's going to be the intake valve. The exhaust usually has plenty of clearance in a big block.
You need to decide on a compression ratio and then how you plan on getting it to there before buying parts.

alright thanks... now im sorry that im a little behind here but im all new to this. i did take a vo-tech class in high school and we did do motors but never this detailed. What exactly is decking? and once you have decked it do you have to worry about anything else or change anything else? Does decking effect compression ratio?
