cooling, or should i say heating problem?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Nov-02 AT 11:40 PM (EST)]Hi,
I have just a minor little thing thats gettin' to me lately. My truck runs very cool, barely in the normal range most of the time. I just want to get it back up to normal to maybe pick up some better gas mileage, because I drive about 300 mi. every weekend. I've replaced the thermostat to no avail, and the water pump and temp. sending unit was replaced along with the radiator rodded out about a year ago to fix my overheating problem, which it did. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head and was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
Thanks,

Where on you factory temp gauge is the needle? My 94 with a 302 never gets to the N in NORMAL unless it is real hot outside. I would suggest getting an after market temp gauge to see where you stand. I would suspect that if you have replqaced nearly everything in the cooling system it would be working normaly.

Yeah try to borrow a real gauge. In my opinion, most factory gauges are really not accurate and are meant only to give relative readings such as hot , too hot, cold, cool or just right. There is probably a lot of variation between trucks so use a real gauge to check.

I would guess anything in the lower 3/4 of the normal range is OK. The real indication of a problem is if the gauge reads very different from what is "normal" for your truck. For example my F250 460 runs between the O and R in Normal most of the time. It will read as high as M and A if I am towing uphill in hot weather. If I see temperatures different from these under similar conditions, I will suspect something is wrong.

Another check is, hot hot is your heater? If the air coming out is very warm or hot, then you are probably OK. If it is luke warm then you may have a problem.

Goodd Luck,

Jim Henderson

Yeah I kinda figured I should put a real guage on it just out of curiosity. It runs slightly below the N most of the time, occasionally covering the N on the guage. It also crossed my mind as to how accurate the dash guage is anyways. What makes me think something is wrong is that it takes forever to warm up in the morning, therefore the heater takes a long time too. It also seems like it is not as hot as before (the heater). It always used to run in the O to R range on the guage, and then best I can remember, one day it just stayed lower. I cant think of anything I have done that would have made it do that.
Thanks for the responses,
