I've seen a few of the service bodies that match the contours of the factory bed. Dunno if it was a ford option or aftermarket but they looked nice, till all the doors started rusting at the bottoms.

That was a company out of CA. they quit making them about 5-6 yrs ago. I wanted to get one when I swapped the flatbed off my 550.
I was thinking of using the the spare tire cable wrench and attach it to a weather tight tight box that you could wrench up and down like you do the spare tire. But I myself have stock size tires and like having a spare so I was thinking of getting another spare tire wrench and the space on the right front side of the bed and put a box there that I could wrench up and down. That way I could keep all my "what if" parts and tools in it. I just haven't put alot of thought in it since I have been busy with a long list of things I need to repair. Maybe one of you guys could do something with this idea.
Forgive me for saying this, but I do like Dodges idea with the "Ram box"
Its a great Idea for a work truck.
The basic idea is good, but having it on the top of the rail is stupid IMHO. A work truck typically needs way more storage than those little compartments allow and with it taking up the rail you cant put hi side boxes or utility toppers on. You cant even put a cross box in that sits on the rails!
If you don't have a gooseneck hitch you could probably fab up a shallow box to fit in the middle of the bed in front of the spare tire. I think you could still have it 8 inches deep or so (haven't measured).
I took a piece of 3/4 plywood and made a box on both sides of the bed sitting the same height as the wheel wells. bolted it to the wheel wells and ran it up under my crossbox. Worked great for chains, boomers, shovels, hitches and many other items. Still had 4' between, but I always intended to fab it out of steel to make it cleaner looking.
There isn't a crossmember. You unbolt the spare tire holder and you have a big hole. I can take measurements if anyone needs them. Since I don't have a bed on my project atm
There should be a huge crossmember there.
Best pic I had with the bed off. You can see it at the bottom of the pic.
I have one of those fancy beds... It was made by royal truck bodies in cali
Measurements for depth wouldn't work because the boxes only leave a 4x8 bed
Hey Jim if you ever want to get rid of that bed please keep me in mind,I cant find them.
I could have sold that bed a million times, over... Had big plans for the truck from day one so I traded it to ther family business for a 08 take off...rumor had it they were going trip make them again
