I am sure I'm not the only one who can never have a fully empty bed because if I think I will need something, it stays(jumper cables, tow strap, ball hitches, socket set)
Since I have a tonneau cover, and dont like toolboxes in a shortbed, I have been pondering the idea of putting a box where the spare tire is. Being I run 35's, the spare tire is just dead weight anyways. All that one would have to do is cut a square hole in the bed and hinge it. Then weld up a box that will sit in place of the spare tire.
Dig through some of the marine suppliers. There are drop-in storage boxes made for boats that are water tight and come with hatch covers. Might be something a guy could adapt.
Personally, I'd like to find something that fits underneath the sides, in front of the rear axle and between the frame rail and exterior sheet metal. There's only so much you can put behind a seat ya know...
my first pickup a 1968 Ford F250 camper special had a side storage box in the passenger side of the bed. It was lockable and water tight. It would take some work fab work but I don't see why it wouldn't be doable on a Superduty.

DITTO! My daughter's old 250 has that. I keep looking at it wondering about doing the same thing to my F350. On both sides tho...front and rear of the tire.
Forgive me for saying this, but I do like Dodges idea with the "Ram box"
Its a great Idea for a work truck.
Ditto, I want that on my truck.
As for where the spare tire goes, I plan on putting a fuel tank there for the WVO, people make them, they just charge like $600 for them, they would be a great start to a water proof box though.
If it's sealed correctly, your goods will stay dry.
Here's a set up a guy did in a 1st gen 4Runner. It was completely prepped and coated with bed liner before it went in, very cool. I was going to to it to mine but sold it first.
Just keep in mind that there is a crossmember above where the spare tire sits.
There isn't a crossmember. You unbolt the spare tire holder and you have a big hole. I can take measurements if anyone needs them. Since I don't have a bed on my project atm
