O2 Sensor question

Hi all,

I'm a new owner of a 2001 Excursion Limited 4x4. A week after buying the Ex, the SES light came on. Autozone pulled a P0171 code and tried to sell me two O2 sensors. The dealer also tried to sell me two sensors. My instinct tells me that both Autozone and the dealer just wanted to make more money by suggesting that I buy two sensors. I replaced the forward sensor on bank one, cleared the code and so far so good.

My question is, is there any reason why I would have to replace either of the other O2 sensors if they are not producing a code? Will having one new sensor affect the operation of the other two?

Thanks in advance for your input.

I think the only thing you'd want to do is reset the computer by pulling the battery cable for 30 minutes. That way it learns the new sensor instead of thinking it is responding at the same values as the old one. If already did that to reset the code then disregard.

I don't know of any issues with just replacing the one and not the others but I'm not the final authority on this. I'll let someone else chime in to confirm or rebutt.

Sounds like your intuition paid off. Sounds like the parts places were trying the shotgun approach.
