Have 1999 7.3 Power stroke with 195k on it. Keep getting black jelly like substance plugging what my mechanic says is metered orifice/regulator at end of fuel line where goes into separator filter on top of engine. He cleaned out and replaced separator filter 1st time. Ran OK for a few hundred miles then same thing. Tried replacing fuel pump, clean out again lines and regulator. A hundred miles same thing. Next dropped fuel tank, full of crap, thought tank might be deteriorating so replaced tank. Put 25 gallons chevron diesel in it. Ran good for about 300 miles. then same thing. He is Ford certified mechanic but says has not seen this problem before and unsure of what to do. I'm $1600 poorer and can't afford to keep guessing. Any info would be appreciated. Also quit going to different stations awile back as I know about problems. Just use chevron. Wondering if maybe some crap was still in system and should just clean out again and pray. Thanks for any help.
I would say that all filters in front of tank need to be replaced, if they were not, after changing tank. Also clean and flush good fuel through all parts that are not being replaced. Diesel will grow aglae and if there is anything left in the system it could spread and continue to give you problems.
It sounds like you have an algae problem... Go to NAPA and get some algae treatment, then clean everything out and change all filters. Put the treatment in with some fresh fuel. The best thing to do then is run a few tanks of fuel through it with treatment.
If there was algae in your system when you replaced the tank, the algea was re-introduced into your new tank to multiply. Keep some spare filters on hand while you perform the algae treatment because they are going to plug.
Algae likes to grow in a warm stable environment, so if your truck was sitting for a while some time ago, it most likely started back then. Once its gone, its gone. But it is very hard to get rid of.
