Yesterday I dropped my front tank to replace the shower head on the pickup. That went fine and I had no issues there.
I read about people cutting off the internal tube from the filler hose to reduce the annoying foaming issues we have. I cut mine off flush with the filler head. I took the truck out and filled up the front tank. The problem I have is that it overflows. I understand why and what the purpose of the tube was but I was hoping someone here had a solution to this issue. It didn't overflow out of the filler tube, rather somewhere under the truck.
How many gallons does this tank take? I think I was around 21.5 gallons when I noticed it was overflowing.
If it is leaking out under the truck, the thing to check is the seal where the lock ring holds the sender and pick up unit into the tank. They tend to leak from there once disturbed.
For the venting and foaming and slow fill ups, I gutted the metal filler neck. Of course this will allow you to put more fuel in faster and use semi pump handles, but it still will not work well at all without upgraded vents. I removed the rollover valves and installed some big vents on their place.
First pic shows the stock rollover/vent valve setup:
This pic shows rollover valve removed and large vent setup installed that I pieced together.
I ran my vent up near my filler neck, this is a personal preference thing, you could hide it somewhere if you wanted to.
I can't run every pump wide open, but I can always set it on the first or second click and walk away. If I hold the pump handle in the "sweet spot" I can usually run most pumps 3/4 or more. I can fill up about 2-3 minutes per tank.
Forgot to add that if you do this, and you flip your truck, your fuel will run out very quickly. So I am not recommending this, just saying its what i did.
That is something I want to do, but haven't taken the time. I would suggest having something in the end of that hose, or you will be able to get water and dirt into your tank with it wide open like that.
Never mind, I checked it out this morning and it turns out that I missed a notch while assembling the locking ring and that's where the leak was coning from. I topped it off this afternoon and she is holding steady with no signs of leakage. I drove 210 miles HWY this weekend on the front tank, with it leaking and I filled it with 10 gallons, where I felt it was before. That's 20 MPG. It may be a little better or a little worse but now that it is not leaking, I can tell for sure.

I did replace the lock ring gasket with a new Motorcraft part. The old one wasn't bad but if I have the tank down and the part ready, I might as well do the job right.
I sprayed the top of the tank with white lithium grease. It wasn't rusted or anything but again, I figured a little PM can't hurt.
