Are you doing a complete swap-axel to axel? If so, it'll bolt right up. You are going to run into an issue
with the Differential yoke/drive shaft, as the later model diff. has a different spline count...easily fixed
with the use of a conversion U-Joint for the drive shaft to diff yoke. There will also be a few issues with
emergency brake cable lengths...the 1971 will need longer cables-one is longer than the other.
I did this swap a year ago to get better road gearing and better brakes.
You are going to run into an issue with the Differential yoke aka companion flange/drive shaft, as the later model diff. has a different spline count easily fixed
Some 1966 F250's have 10 splines, some have 29 splines as do all 1967 and later F250's.
It also depends on the size of the u-joint cups if 29 splines. 1966/72: There are four different 29 spline 'companion flanges.'
Sorry guys, I'm still confused. Are you telling me that my drive shafts' yoke, with the 2 u-bolts won't fit into the 71 diff. where the u-bolt nuts go thru? Also how bout using the 71 emer. brake cables? Thanks again
Thanks guys, I think the seller has the Dana still under the truck. If not , What do i have to do, take my drive shaft out there? That would be no problem, also Crop duster said my cables wont work. What route do I take on the cables?
Well, sorry guys...I'm the one who caused some confusion here in the first place, and thanks to Bill (NumberDummy) for setting it straight.
Ok, so here are a few images and that may help me clean up my mess....
I mentioned replacing the E-brake cables as the ones on my donor Dana 60 (3.73)axel were rusted....these are longer than the original ones on my original Dana 60 4.56 axel.
The Diff. Yoke + "Companion flange" photos show the spline that I spoke of, the original was a 10 spline (pictured Below), the new one is a 29 spline, and there is also a photo of the u-joint conversion in the next posting.
Also, my truck doesn't have the original engine or trans. (now has a 302/C4), so I don't even know if my Dr. Shaft is original. What the heck did I get involved for!
