Finally got a chance to work on a cool 70's roll bar I scored at
Pick n pull for $27.00. Today I fabled up part of my spare tire mount.
Next I plan on welding loops to attach a 2 inch ratchet strap for added security around the tire.
Anybody have any concerns about the strength. The roll bar is 3/16" wall tubing and the spare mount is around 1/8" wall x 2" Square. As far as
I cab tell so far that booger is solid I tig welded all of the new welds.
Next week I plan on making a mount on top for my 60" high lift extreme jack and a Jerry can mount on the passenger side.
Here's what it looks like mocked up in my truck. When I get all
of the welding done I'm going to sand blast the whole thing and paint it semi gloss black.
Nice score. I really dig Pick N Pull cuz there's no haggling. Plenty for the pickin too.
A couple of suggestions to boggle yer noggin:
Extra light tabs! Maybe even one within each triangle to shoot sideways. Cops call 'em "alley lights".
Four lights on top looks better than two which look plain lonely.
High-lift is going on top? Weld some studs made from 1/2-inch bar with drilled holes for small padlocks. Cushion the jack with old shock bushings to avoid the annoying "clang!".
Consider adding hardware for a safari rack that cantilevers over the cab.
CB antenna or PA speaker mount?
Consder making or having a vinyl cover made for the spare. Spare tires can degrade due to prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Add gussets for additional detail?
The mounts' backing plate should 3/4-inch or more wider/longer. The sheetmetal sandwiched between the mounts can fatigue and crack. A bigger and offset footprint spreads the load over a larger area.
Wish I had room for lights but she won't fit under the garage door with them. I may put on two upside down for back up lights.
I wouldnt put backup lights that far forward, you'd be casting all sorts of shadows. Ive got 2 55w on the underside of my rear bumper and they're perfect. It would be a good idea to put one or two on to light up the bed and 2 "alley lights" like HIO said.

The whole truck looks hideous. The rear lights with the yellow body look like $#!t.
I was thinking of picking up a roll bar the other day and it got me thinking about how much we spend on wheels and tires and how much it would suck to have your spare stolen. What are you thinking for security? It'd be sweet if you could get a padlock with a long enough bolt to go through the wheel stud holes, but I'm not sure anybody makes one that'd work.

Drill a fourth hole a put one of these through it?
I'm using the same gorilla splined lugs that are on my wheels. Not theft proof but you at least have to have the special socket. My truck stays in the garage when I'm not driving her so that cuts down a bit on the crap bags wanting to steal my wheels.
Also does anyone know of a place that will cut custom length ratchet straps. I may end up taking one to the upholstery shop if the length doesn't work out right.
This is exactly the idea I had for my new 74.
I like the throwback factor of the old rollbars. Couple that with useable features and you have a win win situation.
I started looking for a roll bar to buy online and quickly found out that they haven't been for sale for years.
Great idea looking in the local Pick and Pull.
As far as the lights clearing the garage, how 'bout fabbing up a rotating mount that will fold down when not in use (yes I have been thinking about that problem). It could mount on the rear hoop and have pins to lock it up or down.
Nice job on the wheel mount.
How 'bout jerry can mounts and a tool box rack?
A Jerry can is already in the works. Maybe two.
I already have a side toolbox in the bed. I may put in a old 50 cal ammo can for my chains and some more tools.
I've also thought about a flip up light bar but I just know I'll forget to lower it one day and smash the lights. I'll probably fab up one on a bracket I can bolt on only when I need them.
