O.K. This is my first post to the forum, i have been learning alot about Ford for awhile now and go nowhere else for my info. I have a 99 F250 SD with a 5.4 and 235,000 miles on it, I bought it used with 180,000. I'm not sure of how the original owner cared for it, but, this is my first Ford.. i've always been a Chevy guy.. but now i love my Ford and will do whatever it takes to keep it going! I have stuck a lot of time into this thing but still cant get rid of the vibration.. it starts at 36mph and smooths out around 70mph. I have done upper and lower ball joints, new tires, shocks, rotors and brakes, drive shafts, all new u-joints..i believe there are 7, and new torque converter! Had the dealer flush the motor and tranny.. i changed the fluids in both diffs with new covers, new spark plugs and boots. It has a lower knock that seems to be coming from around the bell housing, that's why the new converter, but that also was a waste of money! Any ideas as to the vibration? Its driving me insane!!!!!!
Would a bent rim "just happen" i have'nt done anything that could do that.. yet.. I just today had all wheels balanced, This is really getting on my nerves! But i refuse to let it kick my ***!!!
Mike278.. how did you know your wheel bearing was bad? I did all of the normal checking on my wheel bearings and they all seem fine! Are there wheel bearings in the rear, because some of the vibration seems to come from the *** end..
Could a burned out clutch pack on a limited slip rear end cause vibration? Or even stuck plates maybe... drawing straws here!! All wheel bearings seem fine and the truck being an early 99 i really don't want to dive into that expense yet! from what i have been told, a set of bearings for the front can cost me upwards of $500.00 just for parts and it don't look to be a very simple job!! Thanks for all the help....
I found mine when I was doing the ball joints. When I had the bearing out I noticed it looked a little dark on the back side of it. When I spun it by hand I could feel the roughness. A new one was about $150. Another way to tell is if there's any change in the vibration when you go around a curve in the road (more or less weight on the bearing). There are wheel bearings in the hubs in the rear. They're a little more of a PITA to change, but they can go bad. There's a special socket you'll need to tighten those, but it's only about $20. When my bearing was bad I could feel a vibration at about 40mph to 55mph.
I GIVE UP!!!!! It kicked my *** and my wallet... i concead! Ford 1 me 0... Put in a new Flex plate and new Motor mounts and if you look at the original post, a boatload of other stuff. Not one mechanic can figure it out, they all want to do something different, but at my expense. This thing is officially for sale!!!
