Need some help.
so i got the engine to run long enough to do the koer test by disconnecting the vacuum line that goes to the brake booster
i came up with a couple codes, heres what i got
12 connot control prm during self check or idle speed control problem
21 coolant temp out of range
44 thermactor air system failure
34 pressure feedback egr sensor voltage is high
13 connot control rpm low during self test or idle speed control inoperative
73 unsufficient throttle position sensor change during dynamic response or goose test
25 knock sensor not detected during dynamic test
on the koeo test i only came up with 2 codes that said system pass, so thats no help
ok so i know that i dont have a knock sensor installed
so i plan on getting that
i have no clue what the hell thermactor air system is (explain?)
basically, any help would be fantastic
right now im thinking tps sensor replacement
thanks in advance for all the help
I agree with you on the TPS - it can't control the idle speed and can't tell when you've hit the accelerator in the "goose it" test.
Replace that (or fix the wiring to it as the case may be) and run your tests again.
The two sites I listed above show you how to run the tests by counting flashes of a test light; it's not as easy as using a code reader and the results can be hard to interpret but it'd keep you from having to rent a code reader.
Disconnect the battery for ~10 minutes (while you're changing that part is a good time) to cause the computer to forget about everything in the past. It'll have to go re-learn the idle speed and whatnot but, assuming the TPS and IAC are working OK, that's not a problem.
IAC = Idle Air Control, the motor that actually sets the idle speed, hopefully this isn't another one of your problems....
Thermactor is the A.I.R. pump aka the smog pump, it won't cause the engine to not run (but the EGR valve being stuck open COULD cause it to not idle, and a bad TPS can cause all kinds of problems as the computer has no idea where the throttle is)).
One thing at a time....
sorry, im not all caught up on my christmas tool list (wife keeps telling me that i have to buy things for the kid....)
as far as the tps- thanks for the heads up
so i was told by one of the guys at oreilleys that i should take out my egr and clean it up, then voltage test both that and the tps and ohm out the egr valve
honestly im not used to all this stuff, im an old fashioned big engine, carb, some gears and a gas pedal, so ill keep tellin yall whats happening and what results im getting if yall keep throwin ideas at me
But I learned a lot, oddly enough, from the guys here.
Testing the electrical devices will generally require a multimeter - something that can measure both voltage and ohms.
Harbor Freight sometimes has the el-Cheapo variants for less than $5, Wally World has el Cheapo variants, too (though I don't recall their prices).
Something like this:

From Digital Multimeter - Save on this 7 Function Digital Multimeter
Some of these trucks have got EGR valves the computer knows about, I think yours is one of them as the computer spat out an EGR-related code.
I see devices like this on Ford vehicles of this era, it's some sort of EGR vacuum solenoid:

There are also sometimes devices on the EGR valve itself, something like this (in the below picture, I believe the uppermost device is the same as that pictured above, but I'm referring to the device on the metal diaphragm which I believe is some sort of position sensor):

That 2nd picture there, that reminds me - you can learn a lot from Ford Fuel Injection.
I have no idea how to test any of the electrical EGR stuff, nor do I know what EGR-related device the computer is complaining about, but I've cleaned the carbon out of the mechanical valves before.

The EGR valve has a gasket, don't forget you'll need to replace that if you remove it.
There's lots of good help on the 'net for testing the TPS, not so sure about the EGR stuff as I've never done it, but...
Let google be your friend!
Let me google that for you
Let me google that for you
Is this something we should all know about, or should that particular dolly be kept in the closet???
(I think I want to know about this one!!)

HAHAHA good one. No my lovely hubby loves to blame me for his lack of tools but everytime he asks me for a tool I say no because he spoils his daughter too much which is why hes only allowed in auto shops with her lol there are no barbies or dolls. so my lovely hubby I am prolly one of those rare wives that says SCREW THE RING GET THE DAMN TOOL. lol
I quit drinking some time ago, but not the rest of the people at the party...........
When Dear Hubby or his wife come back, this thread will get back on topic.......
