Truck Moves Forward When Starting!

my 2000 did the same
I used to own a 2000 SD 4x4 5.4 auto, that did the same thing. It would only move a little. But it was enough to make me think "whoa what the hells going on". My truck only did it when it was really cold outside, and the trans was extremely cold, and parked on a flat surface.

Nope. Just learned to live with it. It never did it in my driveway on cold days. My driveway is on an incline though. I got thinking maybe when I parked at work, on the flat, maybe the park pin in the transmission wasnt engaging (if the 4r100s even have a park pin in them). And when I would start it after work, it would roll forward on start-up, until the pin caught. I don't know thats just what I was thinking. I'm probably wrong. I have an 03 now with 128'000 on the odemeter and it hasnt done it yet. My 2000 had over 170,000 when it started doing it.

i did see that occur once with my dad's '94 3/4 ton. the trans linkage on the coulmn under the dash had gotton loose, right where the cable attaches to the bellcrank. (lot of fwd/rev shifting, snowplow useage) and even though the seletor ws in park, the trans was really in reverse. glad i never jumpered it across the solenoid under the hood to start it. a little loctite and things tightened up, it never happened again.

You should always set your E-brake before putting it in park, it will reduce the load on the parking pawl in your transmission. Definitely on grades, but I set mine on flat terrain as well, just make a habit of it. Neutral -> set E-brake -> Park, every time. The only exception to this is in very cold temps on flat ground, then I sometimes don't use the E-brake so there is no concern of it being frozen in place next time I go to drive.
