C6 vs AOD

I am currently in the process of a frame off on my 71. I had been planning on rebuilding the 390 and C6 that come in the truck, but I think I am going to do some changing. I have decided to build a driver and not one to just set in the garage to look pretty. I am thinking about changing to a 300 6, I have had a few of these motors and know it would do what I need. My question is what difference in fuel mileage would I see between a C6 and a AOD transmission. I know the C6 would be a lot tougher but the AOD should be a little better on gas. Thanks for you input.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Well the 300 aint no 390, but can make you a good daily driver. Take a look at a early 90s donor pickup and get your 4.9/AOD combo. Should have what you need.

Lot of things to consider. Present mpg vs expected from the 300I6, present rear end gear ratio, what speeds you intend to drive on a daily basis. For the AOD to be of any use, your engine rpm's need to be in it's power band. If not running in it's torque range the tranny will be constantly shifting. The guy's in the six cylinder forum can give you good advise on what to expect with the different combinations.

You can count on 15 mpg from a well-tuned I-6, even with factory four-speed or C6 and stock rear gears. Might consider a 302, too...there are folks on forums who like a small block V-8 and C6 or AOD in half ton trucks...they claim mpgs close to what you can get from a I-6, but poor results towing. I wouldn't put an I-6 in a 3/4 truck, the extra weight works the engine to death eventually.
