OK, Ive got a 2008 gasser ,12 passenger and I installed some heavy duty coils (Otto Max 2814) in an attempt to raise the front end so I could fit larger tires under it. It worked, got about 1-5/8" of lift and lost almost all my ride. It rarely moves up and down at all. It does compress under the weight if the van but when its on the pavement, there is very little give.
Then i pulled a 6500# trailer without an equalizer hitch (at first, I've since bought one) and noticed that the front end rode very supple since a few hundred pounds were taken off due to the tongue weight.
So here is my question: If i install airbags inside my front coils and pump them up to lift the front end a bit, will it ride better, bouncing on the bags instead of the springs which are not compressing as is? I understand that I'll need an alignment and know that there is room for adjustment.
There is little if any give in the front suspension. Even hitting the brakes hard to come to a complete stop, there seems to be no dive at all. It's a little rough to say the least.
It seems to me as though adding air bags can only increase spring rate and make the front end ride harder. I also have difficulty understanding how adding tongue weight could make the front of the van ride any easier unless it basically made it "float" or added leverage when the suspension would cycle or something...or if they are variable rate springs and the weight in the rear end put them at a slightly softer part of their compression cycle.
But adding more rate with air bags seems completely opposite from what you're after.
