Heres the problem. I was driving and when i pressed the gas to downshift the truck stalled. I tried to start up the truck but all it did was crank, but not start. One thing i noticed is that i could not here the fuel pump turn on so i thought the pump had gone bad. So i replaced it was a brand new fuel pump assembly from the dealer. Even replacing the pump i still had problems so i replaced the fuel filter, regulator and the fuel pump relay. Well that helped a little but when i was driving for a while i stomped on the gas and it stalled out. The wierd thing is that when it dies the pump does not want to turn on, but if i leave it alone for like 3 hours the pump would turn on. Now it doesn't turn on anymore. I've already gone through 2 pumps and replaced the relay again, becuase the one i bought was the one with 5 pins and the one originally was a 4 pin. Now my truck doesn't even start. The motor turns but the fuel pump won't turn on. Can someone tell me what might be the problem.
This might not have anything to due with it, but worth knowing about it and it location. The ...crud, forget what it is called, some type of cutout switch that is located on the firewall inside the cab up and left of the brake pedal. Doubt it is the problem but cant hurt to find it and look. I know I broke mine when I "sprung" it to stop fuel pressure for a filter change. Now it doesnt have the safety or something like that to prevent it from shutting off if kicked accidently. My .02
I dont know about it being broken broken....but I know I went off of someones idea in here for relieving the pressure, to GENTLY pry the little orange or red thingie up and crank the motor till it just doesn't start. I guess my gentle wasnt gentle enough and I do remember cracking something. It has been a while since I did this and dont really remember exactly what I did to it. But I think it cracked off a piece of black plastic that was a safety of sorts for that red thing. Getting the idea of what I am saying?...lol I dont think I am. But as far as it going bad, I am not sure it is a part that would degrade as opposed to just quitting. Jump in any time experts...lol
Take a look at the inertia switch....see if the, I guess I will call it a plunger, the red/ orange portion, moves freely in the housing. I dont think it should just beebop around in it....
If you got it to start AFTER you replaced the pump, its NOT the inertial switch. I would pull codes from the computer first, then troubleshoot from there. Check Steve83's signature link as to the procedure or take the truck to your local Autozone or NAPA. They will pull codes for free. Otherwise you are chasing blindly and spending money hand over fist and may or (more likely) may not be fixing the problem.
Greystreak...as far as pulling codes, can that tell if the Knock sensor is bad? I havent gotten to the truck yet today as it is almost snowing here again today. That was part of the plan was to check that. I am trying to determine why the cylinder in question on engine chews up spark plugs. I replaced them after a look and the truck ran like a champ, then went back into standard mode after a few days, my guess is that spark plug looks the same as the one I pulled out.
