Trap shooting

last fall my older bro' started getting me into trap shooting. at the time i was 19 ( 20 now ) and had not gone trap shooting since i was about 15.

it seems like i can just blast them out of the sky when i am shooting a shotgun with * 2 * beads on the barrel. my dads 870 and killed many a clay pigeon, he used to compete with it.

i can barely hit any with it- ( my dads 870 ) it fits me fine but it has one bead on the front. from hand tossing one time i hit 2 out of 10- then i used my brothers mossberg 500 with 2 beads- hit about 8 out of 10, then used my brothers benelli nova- with 2 beads, and once again hit about 8-9 out of 10.

does anyone else have this same problem? seem better with 2 beads instead of one?

Um try closing one eye.

If you already do then open them both.

If you shoot any poopier than put the gun down and just walk away. j/k.

It takes you a lot longer to sight with 2 beads than one but if you like it then have a qualified gunsmith put one on.

I can't watch you shoot but when you are at the range they normally don't charge you for missed shots, so you can lead it until you hit it.

Whatever shot you use, try to move down to at least 8.5 but try to get 9. I had some custom stuff loaded with 12 but that stuf looked like a cloud when I shot, excellent for home defense, can't miss literally.

I prefer one bead because I always mistake one bead for the other.
When I was learning, I took a tiny bead of red loktite and put it on the base of the sightline, so I could line them up better. Granted, I saw two of the red dots cuz they were so close to my eye, but if I lined the 3 beads up so the black one was in the middle, and they were level, I could hit just about any clay that was thrown. And as a kid with an itchy trigger finger, the action of lining up the 3 dots forced me to wait that extra split second you have to take, to force yourself to sight in on the clay.
Now I just do it by matter of sight; I don't even see the bead anymore...it's more of a "feel" now.
Keep blasting clay, you'll find your preferences and do well with them!

Trap shooting

Cool topic. I recently got into shooting 5 stand. Great sport. But I shoot a remington 1187 and it only has one bead on it. I find it easier with only one bead. My preference.

I would say that however you feel comfortable shooting, if it is with one or two, or three . On the same note, a friend likes shooting with fiber optic sights on his gun, I tried shooting it, and found them to be a HUGE distraction while trying to line up the bird. It all boils down to what you are comfortable with.

BTW, I am selling my 1187 to buy a Browning O/U. I thought that I would always be happy with my 1187 until I shot a friends O/U. Now I want one bad!!! Also if you like trap, try sporting clays. This is an awesome sport. Golf with a Shotgun

Keep blastin clays, and having fun.

When I go trap shooting, have the same problem using the beads to line up the shoot. I went out and bought one of those fiber-optic glo sights. It has improved the number of clays I hit. It has made trap shooting and hunting more enjoyable.

Well you see that when you shoot the trap you get the running rabbit shot next so you still get him and traps are cheap. hehe.

Two beads look cool, but they just don't work for me. I prefer the single bead since I find two distracting.

Who is looking at beads when the running rabbit is out? Point and shoot, shoot it, SHOOT IT!!! Blast it all. Lol

Myself, I prefer one bead and two eyes open, for maximum vision. That applies to any gun I shoot.

Yeah, two eyes open is the first secret to shooting a shotgun, I think. If you seat the stock properly, and you practice alot, your eyes will always be level to the barrel. It takes practice, like anything else, but as soon as I stopped closing my left eye, I stopped retrieving as many clays...
I need to get a new shotgun...had to sell my old 870 to pay rent a year ago.
I want to go blast some clay...

Trap shooting

Trap guns are purposely sighted high to shoot at a rising clay target. The two beads should be sighted with the front one sitting on top of the rear, so it looks like the figure 8. It takes a little more time to get the beads aligned, but that's okay for trap shooting because you're supposed to already have your gun mounted before you call *pull*.

A single bead sight is better for hunting or clay sports where you have the gun at rest and snap it to your shoulder for the shot. Also a trap gun will have a straight comb, where a sporting gun will have a drop at the comb.

If you're shooting trap from the five stations, the trick is to set your feet for the hard shot (angle clay) and hold the gun for the easy shot (straight-away clay). That way if you get the straight-away clay it's a gravy shot. If you get the angle clay, you naturaly unwind your body in the direction you're feet are set.

Are the choke tubes different on each gun?

On my Browning A-5 I have to let the clays get out farther than I do with my Browning BPS, different choke tubes.

May be your problem, just a thought.
