Weak heaters

My 2000 Expedition has these heater symptoms:
A/C works great, but heater does not put out max heat.
Fan works; but if Panel/Floor is selected then it does not blow out panel, but blows out elsewhere, like defrost. Rear heater is the same (low temp output). Could it be the computer in the selector head (temp probe?). If the front blend door was malfunctioning, would that effect the rear temp too?
Any suggestions?

I had this issue in our Merc Cougar..come to find out I drove it all summer w/ ac blowing out defrost for no reason..stuck my head up under the dash and found a vacuum hose disconnected from the vac pod. hooked it back up and all was blowing out the correct vent selections...

but we all know getting behind the dash of these beastly expeditions is next to impossible with out making a day or two of it.

expedition wise Im having heater issue's as well...dnt think its blend door as Ihear it move and the air temp changes...but won't get very warm at all..grrrr.

replied to put this topic next to the other heater issue in "Heellppppppp" thread.

The heat in mine is weak too.Might be your thermostat, I picked up a new one today and hope to get it in after I finish working on brakes/bearings/ball joints.

Your symptoms point towards a leaking vacuum hose. Check around the back half of the battery. The HVAC main vacuum hose runs there and corrosion from the battery tends to eat through the hose.

The tstat is low on my to-do-list, just finished doing the front end (bearings ball joints etc) and brakes all around. Should be later this week or weekend.

So I think I have a combination of a problem. Changed the t-stat, and now the truck gets to proper operating temperatures.

The air now will blow warm - not really hot though, when the vehicle is under load. Sitting and idling it goes back to lukewarm to cool feeling.

So I'm thinking that's an air pocket in the system somewhere?

I see. Ill change out the Tstat and go from there. I understand this system is not really under that much pressure..Ill probably flush out the cores under some moderate pressure and try to bleed out the air some how? Thanks for the update

I just read a post from someone on this forum a while back with that same issue. He ended up finding the water pump had several fins broken off. I guess when the engine was up to speed it would pump enough heated coolant to warm things up, but otherwise there wasn't much circulating. With no cap directly on the radiator, I can't think of an easy way to test this. Maybe take off the heater lines running to either the front or back and put a test tube (or some other transparent tubing) between the two ends so you can see the coolant flow. Run the engine up and see if it increases a lot. Not very scientific, but about all I can think of as a test.

I can't remember the exact post, but I do remember that his FLM service center decided to "burp" the truck by jacking up the front wheels. I'm thinking a search for "burp" would turn up this post and that one and no more!

My '99 had the same symptoms. It ended up being the temp control **** was cracked and slipping on the shaft. I replaced the **** and the problem was fixed.
