Trans overheat

Driving home today I looked down at the gauges trans temp gauge was pegged out, check gauge light was on and tow light was flashing pulled over checked oil it was full so I limped it home went out an hour later started the truck no lights on gauge showed normal drove about a mile light came on, gauge pegged out, and tow light was flashing trans cooler is warm but not hot " you can hold your hand on it" I have done a search and found that the gauge sensors are a common problem. And that the external filter could be stopping up my question is : is it that common of a problem that I should go ahead and change it while I have the trans pan off changing the oil and filters?

More than likely the tft sensor in the tranny. I assume also that the tranny is serviced per manual with only the specified fluid and new ext. filter.

Don't really know about the servicing I just bought the truck "2 weeks ago" I was planning on servicing the transmission and differencals this week end just so I know they have been changed the fluid doesn't look real bad but it's alittle orange looking is the reason I was going ahead with the oil change while I was driving it with the light off before it came back on it was shifted normally till it went in to tow/ haul " limp mode"

I've been digging around without any luck is there a link with a picture of this sensor? And should I still use a motorcraft filter or can you use an aftermarket ?

Hey weldworks I slapped this little write-up together a couple months back. Its pretty easy, I just thought it was much worse then what it was. So I made this to help others realize how easy it is. I was hopeing someone would put this in the tech folder where it could help others.
