fuel filter issue

ok so ive been having issues with getting fuel from the tank to the carb i changed the filter @ the carb the filter inline from the pump to the carb. i recently found a filter @ the tank which looks like its got something growing in it ill post a pic at the end of this post. i purchased the truck from a neighbor it was her late husbands and was sitting for awhile. the truck starts and will idle fine. as soon as i drive about a 1/2 mile or so it starts to sputter and dies out. my guess is the bowls in the carb are empty at that point. what im wondering is what is the stuff that was growing in the filter and could it also be in the tank/ lines? its got a 1/2 full tank so im hesitant on having to drain it to check inside. has any one seen this stuff before and what is it? (ive replaced that filter @ the tank already)

in the near future i have purchased new fuel hose to run straight from the tank to the pump but with work and school time is short kinda a weekend thing if i get time =).

any help would be much apreciated

-Stanz

That's just plain alien! I've never seen anything like it. Whatever it is, it is organic.

Save yourself future headaches and drop the tank to drain it. I'd also pull the sender to check the filter sock. If it's original or really old, bet on it being deteriorated.

How does that saying go? "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

Well that kinda looks like a spider in there, JK. Are there any signs that perhaps it was parked for a while and weeds started to grow everywhere, somehow? As for whats in the tank, I would try to drain some into a glass jar and see what comes out. Do you have a fuel filter at the block where the mechanical fuel pump is and is it clean?

Now do you have a carb spacer between the carb and intake, I understand that the intake can get really hot and create vapor lock. Maybe others will chime in with experience on whats in your filter.

Maybe what you see in the filter is the filter sock particles that have deteriorated, as HIO said.

My filters gotten pretty groady too

My truck had similar problems. I thought it was gonna break down on the test drive, but I bought it anyway

Change all the filters (including the one that screws into the carb). Do a tune up too. Adding some sea foam in the gas tank would help a little too.

LOL your experience with the test drive sounds familiar.

SeaFoam works well.

@HIO Silver

yeah i'm dumb founded on what it could be its since been replaced. im hoping none of that is in the tank but if so its gotta go im just gotta replace it my work has a 18 gal tank for $118 i believe includes the sender.

@boxer.fan

the previous owner said he husband had passed i didnt ask how long ago but before i purchased it her brother did a tune up on it and such basic stuff plugs/wires/cap/rotor. in the city it was from you cant park on the grass so the likelyhood of weeds growing into it prob not too high. the filter was also sealed no leaking so i dont think it could grow into maybe a missing gas cap and seedlings passed into the filler neck? posibility. i have since installed an electric pump from MR gasket if i run the truck off of a gas can for the fuel source i have no issues i can drive it till the gas can is empty (3 miles or so tested so far) so im guessing the issue is either in tank or in the fuel line itself. since eliminating those two thing going gas can to fuel pump to carb worked great. and yes i have a fuel filter that screws into the carter AFB and an inline in pretty much identical to the one that is at the tank inline w the barnacles . a co worker actually recommended to me to get the carb spacer i picked a 1 in spacer up today prob gonna get it installed this weekend.

@devino246

this truck did stall out on the test drive but i wanted it pretty bad and knew the engine ran fine and these old trucks don't take much to get them going again i took it anyways.

also im not 100% sure the mechanical pump was bad on it i just assumed it was since it was stalling out i thought maybe the diaphragm was no good in the mechanical.

thanks for your guys input hopefully the tank isnt full of this junk when i drop it. im gonna do the new fuel line first.

Ok so update *I decided to drop the tank today and see if their was anything in the tank causing my fuel issues. Well I pulled out the float and sending unit module. The filter sock was deteriorated and only the frame was left but was just rolling around In the tank. To my surprise I found a old shop rag that was falling apart attached to the sending unit. After inspecting it i noticed the rag was into the the hose leading out to the rubber hose that attaches to the inline filter that was full of the junk. That hose was also full of the fibers. I also used an air compressor to flush out the lines. The tank was drained and washed out and is drying hopefully ready to re install tomorrow. I'm sanding and re painting the tank before the install. *Installed a fuel sock from a local parts store said it was for a VW but works as a replacement. The tank has 2 hoses coming from the side one is the filler neck around 3 inches dia and the other is 3/4 is the smaller hose the vapor return hose?

Thanks Stanz

how did the paint on the tank and the rest of the truck come together? wondering if you got the truck running after cleaning up the rag that was in the tank.
