Ok just for the back story and dont flame me. I have a 76 F100 (title year not so sure) and a 03 Ranger which I had been trying to sale to upgrade to a 99 250 7.3 so I can carry more then 2 people. Well with the way things are I just have not had any luck so, Im going through trying to get the 76 up to par. Its been rough idling and fouls the plugs after 5 mins. So I felt like it was an ignition issue (couldnt find any issues with it). A buddy I work with told me this truck should have a duraspark, but its got a points setup and its the original wiring (the reason I think its not a 76 plus the door tag has been messed with). So I decided to upgrade to the duraspark setup and control module. I got the parts for $65 and started working on it. Well the wire colors dont match my repair book and they dont exactly match between the dist and module. So I did my best to work through it. It fired up and is running.
*** The issue is on the module it has a red and a white. The white I hooked to the ignition at the volt reg and the red I hooked to the ignition side of the starter relay. Ok this was not right. The red has 12volts while running and kept the starter engaged. So odviously I disconnected the red and left the white to the volt reg and it cranks and runs smooth. So my question is can you guys tell me if I have the 2 swapped (red and white) or if I should not run the red at all???
The white wire connection is not absolutely necessary, but it's function is to energize the "retard while starting" function of the Duraspark II module. When cranking the engine, the module actually retards the spark so the engine can crank easier. This allows you to run additional initial advance.
if your truck still has point id recomend a pertronics points eliminator kit or a crane cams fireball II
i feel like your inheriting more problems by switching to the duraspark. when the duraspart is RIGHT its hard to beat but it can be a real p.i.t.a. if not.
my truck has the duraspark and im haveing trouble with it (mostly old wireing and stuff like that). i will be switching to a points dizzy and the crane cams module as soon as i muster enough motivation to go out and do it
I have heard great things with the Duraspark, and parts are readily avaliable at a good price. So that was my thinking behind the conversion. I took 2 mins before work and swapped the two wires at the module and it cranked right up and the starter did dissengage. All is well, just need to do the timing and carb adjustments tomorrow. Thanks for the quick response.
